First western hunt

First off, don’t worry about points your first year. You can’t buy and use the same year anyway. Points will accumulate if you don’t draw or you can just purchase a point for next year . If you do draw a tag you won’t get a point, pretty simple if you look at it as get a tag, no point, get a point, no tag. Now critters, Mule deer and Antelope for sure, in Montana they have some season overlap so you can hunt them at the same time and area. This may hold for other states as well. Just pick a few western states use the hunt planner on F&G website then contact them and talk to the biologist for those areas you’re interested in. Better hurry though, some states are in or pst the application period.

I get the appeal of wanting to start, and it can be overwhelming at first. I was fortunate enough to have friends hunting in a particular state for a particular animal and I decided I wanted to do that so that made getting started much easier.

I think if you are new to western hunting altogether, you have to come up with some idea of what and where you want to hunt. Maybe pick a state because it's easier for you to get to, and then learn about how to get a license in that state. Or, pick an animal that interests you and learn about which states have the best opportunities to get a license for that animal.
