I am so happy the internet did not exist when I was 19. I was just this kid in the Yukon that had a burning desire to shoot a Dall sheep. Guess what ? Mission accomplished with a Bushnell Sportview 4x scope ,Pentax porro prism binos and a Bausch &Lomb discoverer spotter. It was 1986 and I paid for those optics pumping gas for $6 an hour. There are a lot of optics that do not have names like Swarovski, Leica and Zeiss that will get the job done. One I own is a Leupold Gold ring 12-40x60. Easy to pack ,lightweight and pretty good optically. Are there better ones, yes but at some point with optics you pay far more money for that top 10-15% of quality. Before I get crucified for my opinion I will state for the record that if you can afford the top end stuff it is incredible. ( I own a pair of Swarovski EL 8x42 binos). But for guys starting out, I think any decent optic is better than nothing.
