First Lite for Treestand

Hey guys, I wanted a quality, versatile camo and that led me to first lite. I am in college so I cant afford 10 peices of gear, therefore I need help on peices to get to last me from mid sept into january as comfortably as possible.


I was thinking either llano,chama, sanctuary, and NB pants or llano, labrador, sanctuary, and NB pants.

If you have another layering that works well or another brand for me to consider go ahead and chime in.

The sanctuary is brand new this year. Save a few dollars and get the base layers in solids. The NB pants would work well but so would the kanabs depending on temps. Get the hoody base layer; it is a favorite.

We are talking temps from 80 to 0 so I know it is a very wide range. I just want to encompass as much of it as possible. You think Kanabs and alleghenys would work in those super cold temps as well as the NB pants?

I would go a different route to be a little more versatile. I would go llano, Chama hoody or Chama EXP, puffy and NB jacket for the top. Allegheny, NB pants for the bottom. You will probably need a different pant for hot weather. That way you have some protection against the rain

Ryan, that is definitely the way I would love to go and may have to add later, but for right now I cant afford that many peices. Trying to get a solid starter set put together. I really like First Lite but if you guys have another brand dont be afraid to throw it out here.

I would also look at the Aegis jacket from Kryptek.

I am in Missouri and I use kryptek dalibor set all year and just add base layers and puffys as the weather cools

I will look into the kryptek thank you for the advice.

I really like the FL line, and think in early and late season I will be okay with the list I mentioned, I am worried about when it is in the 40-50s though. Ill either be too hot or too cold.

What do you guys think of kuiu compared to first lite?

How far do you walk to your stand? Are you concerned with weight? Do you chill easily? I ask because most Missouri stand hunting is totally different than western hunting.

Stand walks arent too long, I would say I am average when it comes to chill. I would look into something like a sitka fanatic set etc. but would rather do some layering. I saw kuiu is noticeably cheaper, not sure how their merino compares to FL though.

If you're hunting a mile or less from your stand the quality of your clothing is largely irrelevant IMO. I pack in 3 1/2 miles to where I hunt whitetail but it was not until I started packing past 1 mile that I started looking into lighter clothing with better moisture management. Just my opinion and take it for what it is worth, but if I were you (and I have been) I would just buy some decent merino base layers, cheap synthetic pants and outer shirt, cheap bibs and a decent puffy though wouldn't bother with top of the line anything. Rain gear is probably irrelevant because most guys don't stand hunt in the rain. You won't need the bibs and puffy until at least rifle season but they're cozy in stand. Brand names are not important, go cheap and functional then upgrade a piece at a time as you feel the need. Western hunting is a bit more important to pick appropriate clothing as it could potentially cost you your life if not prepared accordingly.

For stand hunting it just depends on temperature and if you are bow or rifle hunting..

Early season I just wear a Llano shirt.. Late season, I don't wear any merino at all.. I wear a good poly base layer and a heavy fleece jacket since it's warm and quiet..

For pants early season I just wear something light, doesn't really matter (C4E Switchback or Kryptek Valhalla).. Then later I wear something a little heavier with a poly base layer..

For stand hunting you don't really need merino or any active gear, you just need warm/quiet and some sort of windshear layer.. I have a full set of FL gear and a little bit of Kuiu, I rarely wear any of it when stand hunting

MO hunter,

Live2hunts advice is sound on saving the money. If stand hunting is the focus for now. If you are in need throw up your sizes. I have some icebreaker tops that seem to have shrunk, or I may have to admit that I've grown a little. I also have some old redhead CWS stuff that I'm thinking about getting rid of that haven't been used in a while.

If you are already setup for stand hunting and are just looking to update to gear orientated more for a western hunting trip in the future; you should start getting those Christmas and birthday lists out there!
