Well me and the brother in-law just got back from our first elk hunt. We did a DIY wilderness backpack hunt and we're very successful contrary to what was expected by others. Needless to say we are hooked for life and now it's time to make some gear changes. Mainly clothing and packs. All this to say that I'm looking for any information on clothing and packs. What you have tried what you like what you hate. All information is appreciated. I have also attached a photo 20150107_150616 (1).jpg

We grew up hunting whitetails in the south so as far as clothing we had a lot of cotton that didn't do well with the first three days of rain. Looks like there are tons of high quality cam out there but they are all somewhat expensive so I thought I would gain some experience from others without having to purchase them all. As far as packs go I used a horn hunter G2 for a day pack and won't be going back without a frame pack. We both used ILBE packs for our main packs. And they did OK but dang are they heavy. We didn't want to get to deep in the coin jar and find out we didn't like it. Needless to say we left the mountain for east Texas planning for next year's trip

Where are you from? I'm in Tyler if you want to try out a kifaru bikini or duplex. I just bought my kifaru this year and it made a world of difference in how far I could go every day.

Tell you what. If you want to ruck one evening just shoot me a pm. I could meet you at Tyler state park. My hunting partner has the duplex and I have the bikini. It will surprise you how much you can carry with a good pack.

Congrats on the trip ! Now is an awesome time to get a used kifaru frame ! Figure out what size you need and watch the classifieds here. As far as clothing all the top tier brands are great. I run a mix of sitka Kuiu (love all of it ) and first lite. Merino wool from most companies is amazing. The Kuiu chughach rain gear is my favorite. (Watch the classifieds here as well for clothes) I've bought most of my gear used from eBay and forums and have no complaints. Congrats agin on your success on your hunt !!

Congrats! My buddy and I just got back a couple weeks back and didn't have any luck notching a tag. Saw one elk and really didn't hear any talking. We'll be back though.

Great job Finch! I'm in Forest Virginia and planning a 2016 trip. If you need a partner or a third partner, give me a shout. I went to Idaho in 2014 and had a blast! Elk get in your blood!
