My Cousin and i set foot into an area we had never seen before outside of google earth Friday afternoon before the MT archery opener. Neither of us had ever called in any elk let alone killed one. This was actually my cousins first time in the hunting woods with a tag of his own.
Bulls were bugling before we even got our camp setup 4.5 or so miles from the rigs. We knew we were in for a treat.
Opening morning came with a surprise encounter with some other hunters who had unknown to us, camped only 3/4 mile down the trail after we had came in the afternoon before. Not often is bumping into other hunters such a refreshing experience in the woods, but these guys were great. They gave us some very helpful info about the area and even let us choose which bugling bull to go after first
After an ascent to a large bowl at the base of the mountain (8,800ft) following the bugles. We set up one more time. 35yds apart in the timber my partner rips off a bugle. much to my surprise, not 20 yards to my right a bugling response and he is walking right toward me. I wait until he commits to an opening to my left and i bring my recurve to full draw - whoops- spotted.... i held as best i could for probably 20 seconds while the bull stared with vitals obscured. finally he took one step and bugled again. as soon as the leg cleared i let'er go. The rest is sore legs and smiles.
Another quick shout out to the guys we met on the trail, i would not be surprised if one of you has an account here Cheers folk and happy hunting!
