Hey guys I was curious on everyone’s opinion on some good factory .270 ammunition for elk. I know that what my gun shoots accurately is by far most important. I’ve shot Remington core lokt 130’s for whitetail in the past and they shoot pretty good but figured I would want to step it up some for elk. Shooting distances will be 5-600 at the maximum. Thanks

My family used a 270 Win for elk for a number of years. All were taken with 150 grain federal loaded Nosler partitions. It's now my wife's rifle and that's what she carries for all hunts. It's still the most accurate load out of that particular rifle. I have tried to get it to like 140 grain accubonds but the rifle and bullet just don't like each other.

130 non leads are pretty impressive elk killers in the .270 - between 130 etips, TSX & TTSX I've seen some pretty dramatic results out to the 500 yards area - 130 Accubonds work very well too - We all shot 270 WSM's for quite a while, since I load for my entire bunch I was fixated on 140 - 150 class bullets but after seeing a lot of elk killed I'm convinced the 130 gr "good" bullets are a good way to go - 140 Accubonds are good too though, just not "needed" IMO
If you reload, ALLIANT and the new Enduron powders produce impressive velocities in the 270 Win, can't say on accuracy myself though …..

Looking at the ballistics of that bullet you have about a 300 yard max gun with a perfect shot.

General consensus is 1200 ft lbs is required for a humane kill on an elk. A hornady superformance 130 grain carries 1200 ft lbs to 590 yards. But yes, a well placed shot is vastly most important.

Why is that? mtmuley
Have seen more failures with that than any other ( the original Balistic tips were bad too)
This is from 25 years working intake at my family's game processing shop 1000+ animals per year.
I have used barnes x when I hunted with a 270 with great results

Interesting. Glad I didn't have the internet when I was killing the shit out of elk with those bullets. And if a dead critter was delivered to you among those 25,000 animals, how is it a bullet failure? mtmuley

i've killed most of my elk with 150 gr ballistic tips in my 270wsm. accubonds didn't do what i expected but still killed elk. i'm now using the ttsx 130gr.

fwiw, i shoot lungs and heart. if i were a leg buster i may have had better luck with the accubond and less luck with the ballistic tips.

I shoot 150 gr Partitions and get great results. My last bull in Wyoming was a complete pass thru at 550+ and a very dead bull.

Shoot what your rifle likes and the elk won’t know the difference.
