This is disturbing. The F500 is the largest stove I could purchase with a rear flue fitting under the threshold. If I replace it I don't want to go to a smaller stove. Two questions are = What is the effect of running a stove with a broken catalyst and how would we know if it was broken without taking the top off?

Depends on how broken it is. If its just cracked, or split, but otherwise in large pieces that still have adequate flow, it will work as normal. Maybe a slight decrease in clean burn, but not a problem. The last one I saw, the catalyst is cast in a stainless frame, and would be hard to damage.

If the catalyst creates a restriction, it will collect soot and ash. Either creating an overheating hazard or just plugging up to the point it won't run well.

Pretty sure you have to take the top off to get a look at the catalyst. And that exhausts my knowledge of Jotul stoves.

Thanks Jeremy .

If it’s not an insert and the catalyst is broken, remove it and put a pipe damper in.

FYI, I’m not sure what kind of stove this is. Just mentioned generalities to try and help if the shoe fits.
