Prepping for a season in the backcountry hunting with horses. Putting together a first aid kit and looking for suggestions on contents. Thinking I'd include vet wrap (to secure the dressing), dressings (maxipads, 5x9 & 4×4 gauze pads), neosporin, betadine, betadine impregnated sponges, SMZs (antibiotic), Bute (anti-inflammatory), Banamine (colic), syringes (50cc, 20cc), Johnsons babysoap (wound cleansing), tweezers (debris removal), duct tape (cuz duct tape can just about do anything...). What else? Looking for ideas, experiences and suggestions.

Can't wait for THE modern backcountry horse forum to be established on this site!!! :)

You don't need both Bute and Banamine. Both are NSAID's (non steroidal anti inflammatory). Banamine does work better for colic type pain than Bute and also works equal as well as an anti inflammatory and on musculoskeletal pain. Just take some Banamine.

Be careful with the duct tape. It is very easy to apply it too tightly and it is also constricting once applied. You can cause soft tissue damage with duct tape.

My 17 year old daughter taught me something just this last week, I now carry childrens benedryl. 1 of my mules always gets beat up by biters and he gets welts on his chest from time to time. I think it is from some of the weeds he gets ahold of but my vet said its mor likely the bugs. Benedryl worked great and welts were gone in about 6 hours.
I also carry wonder dust for stopping bleeding and dressing. I use asprin paste for pain relief. I also carry udder cream for small rub areas.
I dont usually have horses with me just mules and they are far less likley to colic (ive never heard of a mule getting it) but an old timer told me since I usually have gatorade with me anyway to bring some cheap wiskey and if a horse colics mix it half and half with the gatorade and force it on. Whiskey calms the muscles in the stomach and gatordade gets needed electrolytes in.
