I got a free Hoochie Mama with my subscription to Eastman’s Bowhunting Journal, but what’s the best and easiest mouth calls out there? What bugling tube? I have my first trip out west next year and want to get proficient at calling. I already downloaded the Elk Nut app.

I use a system from Rocky Mountain Hunting Calls. I use multiple diaphragm calls and a grunt tube. It gives me the ability to make multiple bugling sounds and project a cow call. You might have heard of Corey Jacobsen. His father owns the company. He is not a bad elk bugler by any means. They have plenty of videos to help you learn how to make certain sounds as well.

Thanks! I’ve heard of Corey and Rocky Mountain Hunting Calls, but which calls would you recommend for a beginner? There are a lot of options

I'd start with the Mellow Yellow and the Raging Bull. Then add a grunt tube of your choice. I'd try to pick the grunt tube in person as they have different options for how wide the opening is where you place your mouth. That part is more personal preference. The Mellow Yellow is their most basic cow call and the Raging Bull is also their most basic bugling call, to my knowledge.

x2 what BCH2 said, those are the two most basic ones. If you're a beginner I would recommend buying two of each as it's easy enough to break the latex when you're just trying to figure them out. They're cheap so having a spare ready to go is worth it IMO.

the Mistress and Mellow Yellow are probably the easiest diaphragms from Rocky Mountain. Phelps calls are also very user friendly. My favorite is the Maverick, but I would probably start with the green one as it is a soft read and easy to get a good sound out of.

Jason Phelps made a post about which of his diaphragms were best to start out with, his recommendations were the black and the gray. I have several Phelps and have been really happy with them.

Started with the Mellow Yellow as well. Picked it up pretty quickly. The latex is soft and is easy to make a respectable cow call or bugle IMO. I’ve switched over to Phelps call this year. As I’ve gotten a bit better I’ve been wearing out the latex in the yellow. Ripped two last season. I still prefer that call for my go to cow call.

Get several different ones. Some will work better for you than others. Different air and tongue pressure for all of them. I like the Phelps amped series black and grey.
