Duplex Timberline 2 or Timberline 2?

I am very new to the western hunting approach, but hopefully I will be going after an elk this fall in Wyoming. I been doing a ton of reading and research on packs and that has lead me to Kifaru! I had settled on the timberline 2, but now I am being drawn to the duplex. If I am not mistaken, the duplex with the bikini frame is almost the same weight. What advice can you guys give me on which way to go?

Thanks in advance!

I would call the sales rep/designer for Kifaru and talk with him about your options. He's a great guy (most of the time) and has used all of the Kifaru suspension systems in great depth.

Here's his contact info (Aron Snyder 720-937-1418...)

He's also a real smartass! But I'll testify that he'll guide you in a great direction.

I started elk hunting using an old school aluminum tube style frame. I went with the Duplex style Kifaru, in case I ever get lucky and drop a huge critter. I feel like the external frame gives me more options for lashing on and stabilizing big odd shaped items, like moose heads or bull elk heads with capes. Everyone also says the external frames handle very heavy loads (100+ lbs.) better than the internal frames. Also, I have mild OCD and when I haul meat I take my Timberline bag off to keep my gear from getting bloody.

I would call this guy, but take what he says with a grain of salt. He is known to tell "tall" tales and make fun of fat guys! I bet he even kicks dogs when nobody is looking! And if he offers to sell you a pack, wait about 2 months because it means something newer and better is coming out!!!!! (lesson learned!)
Don't bother pm'ing him either, if you want an answer you have to call him!

Did you have to get a running start to knock him over? Or did he just kind of roll?

Oh man, I need more emoticons than are available for that one. I will probably pay for it, but I owe Jason one anyway.

You owe me more than one!(in a good way)
Aron does too, but he has probably forgotten how much he owes me!

Your considerations should include:

Total weight you may be packing out (Bikini can handle less)
Do you like having exterior pockets?
Do you wanna pull the bag off and lash meat directly to frame?
How many days will you be out?

For me I needed the maximum backpack for weight and space capable of carrying 7-14 days of gear. The DT1 with external pockets fit the bill, as did the Duplex frame. I would recommend trying to locate people in your area with these packs so you can see em, touch em and nail down your preferences. I thought the DT1 might be too big but i was wrong, it is ideal for me. I thank Aron for that. I was waffling over the same things you are. Once you determine what you will use the pack for the choices become easier. Good luck.
