Are you sure the atoms use primaloft? I know the new ones use coreloft. Would take a pretty big change In design to use those two different insulations. I prefer synthetic on my legs and down for my upper body mostly for mobility and durability. Extreme moisture isn't an issue most of the time where I am.

Correction Coreloft, not Primaloft, thanks. I have too many freaking puffies of all kinds and lost track of them. I am excited of the FL Vest, just need to go figure out that insulation and weight.

Thanks for catching that.

This thread's a couple months old but didn't want to start a new one. Anyway, I love my 800 fill down vest and jacket (patagonia), but I do hunt some wetter areas and have swapped my jacket (kept the vest) for the Arc'Teryx Atom lt. For those of you who have it, how warm is it? I know it won't be near the warmth of an 800-fill down piece, but is there anything you can compare it to? Just curious before I put it through the paces.

I use a quilt and slept in my down jacket underneath it when it was cold. And while I'm worried about the lower warmth value of the atom lt, I wonder if having a hood will actually yield a net positive for heat retention...

I use, and usually carry both. Western Mountaineering Flight down jacket, and Sitka Gear Kelvin Lite jacket. I've worn the hell out of the down jacket over the past 12 years, but am impressed with the Sitka as well. Definitely what I use most for hunting anymore. The down gets used when I'm sitting, or around camp at night.

No doubt down has a slight advantage in perfect conditions....but for everything else the synthetic is the way to go.

Since I'm bowhunting, I'm more likely to encounter wet and not late snow conditions- all of my stuff is synthetic. Plus you can pick up some of these for under $50- a no brainer.....then it doesn't hurt so bad when you burn the edge on a backpack stove.

Both have there place and sometimes all you really need is a Kifaru Woobie or Doobie for those chilly evenings.

I have both! And my favorite are

Western mountaineering for a down puffy

And the Kifaru parka for synthetic.

Both rock. Hard to pic what to wear at times.
