I’m looking for feedback on puffy for glassing in temps under 30 degrees. I’ve read enough threads to make my head spin and beings I’ve never owned one I’m not sure what I need. Before I drop money on one I wanted some feed back.

I currently have 120 merino bottom layer, peloton 97, peloton 240 and a cabelas wind fleece. I don’t care for the wind fleece and plan on replacing it with one of the Kuiu vest(Axis or maybe Kenai). The big question I have is what size and weight for the puffy if I’m wearing those layers, 750? 800? 850? 3-5oz of down? 5+ oz? I see temperature ranges but I didn’t see what layers people are wearing underneath

I just got an SG Grumman on sale and liked it. If the OV would have been out I would have got that instead. It looks like it will be the same weight with more insulation.

My thoughts on the puffy. I would rather pack 2 extra ounces and have to unzip it, than 2 less ounces and be cold.

I packed thin base layer, Sitka Fanatic, and the Grumman. It was freezing in the morning and I was warm. I had my rain coat just in case but never had to wear it to add warmth.

The Rab Electron is great. I also just used their Mythic Alpine on an overnight peakbagging trip. It's got 4.9oz of 900 FP down and weighs 11oz total. Honestly felt very close to the same warmth as the Electron, but much lighter.

I'd recommend against most hunting brand options aside from maybe the Stone Glacier. Warmth/Weight just isn't there.
