Donor 7 PRC Tikka Question

I want to build a 7 PRC Tikka. What would be the best caliber to buy as the donor action and magazine? I want to be able to seat the bullets out to take advantage of the heavier .284's. Please do not suggest a custom build.

Any of the long action magnums in the T3 will work. The short action magnums will too but you’ll need to replace/fix your bolt stop and grab a different magazine.

get an action from @J&A Outdoors
This is the route I went on my second and they were great to work with. Very nice people.

Do some price shopping and see what makes the most sense for you. When I did my first it was cheaper to just buy a complete rifle and pull the barrel. The second time around it was cheaper to buy the action. Especially considering I didn’t want to hang onto the factory barrel or stock afterwards.

But as has been said, any magnum bolt face will work. A long action magnum (7 rem mag or 300wm) will save the hassle of swapping the bolt stop.

I also purchased a Tikka action from J&A Outdoors to use as a switch barrel action. Right now it has a Carbon 6 prefit in 7prc (Have also had a 300 win mag barrel on it) and sits in a XLR chassis. Love it so far.

You won't be able to push them out any further than factory on a Tikka magazine. 180 ELD-M is COL 3.32", you're not loading longer than that without flattening polymer tips. If you like to tinker and believe in seating depth nodes or chasing the lands, the Tikka platform probably isn't a great idea. But if you're okay with an arbitrary measurement like functional mag length and rolling with it, you might consider taking some bearing surface measurements of bullets you plan to test and shortening the freebore up to a suitable length for the sake of barrel life.

New HCA mags advertise allowing for 3.41" COAL.

Or drop the action into an xlr Tikka long action chassis and use the xlr mags with 3.45 internal.

I just built a tikka 7mm PRC from a 300wm.

I am able to fit 175eld-x .020 off the lands and still work in the factory mag.
Custom throat or SAAMI? What's your COAL at that length? By the measurements I could find I would assume you're really close to max mag length and would have issues with smashing tips flat.

Factory tikka super light 300wm.
Proof Research 26” carbon pre-fit standard sammi chmamber. At .020 off lands I am very close to not fitting in the mag but it fits and feeds fine with no issue with tips. For reference factory 175eldx precision hunters are .068 from touching lands.

When I get home tonight I’ll let you know COAL.

So far it doesn’t like factory 175eldx. I have a load with RL 26 & 175eldx @ 3008 fps 1-3/8” 10 shot group. Still looking for something a little tighter but so far that’s the load with 175 eldx

I’ve been loading the 180 hybrids at the boat tail/neck/shoulder junction at 3.3375” out of the factory magazine. Tips do not touch the end of the mag but they are close. No hiccups to date and accuracy has been great. Jump is 65 thou

Man I would load that mag +1 and shoot 3, then pull the last round and inspect it. I was getting some pretty bad flattened tips when I was loading at mag length, but that was also on a standard bolt face so maybe there was a little more clearance allowing it to move.

When I get home tonight I’ll let you know COAL.
No rush, but curious to know. Thinking about going the same route and maybe shortening up the freebore.

Prefacing this with- Never did work up high enough to find pressure due to lack of free time for load development these days. Accuracy was good, bullet was moving fast enough to expand at the ranges I was planning to hunt at and sd has been around 6. Called it good until some free time opens up.

Barrel is 18” carbon six
67gr h1000
ADG brass
CCI 250
2620fps

I feel ya there. That doesn't seem like bad performance for the conditions though. I'm roasting the throat out of a 28 Nosler for the time being til Peterson brass becomes available, then I'll jump on the PRC train.

Factory 175 is running around 2770 so I should have some room to go on the 180's when i get around to it. For now it's going to have to work.

Last I heard Peterson was supposed to be early September so it should be coming pretty soon.
