Dogs and Cheat Grass

We had a little Mountain Cur that would get cheat in her ears. Once we started trimming hairs at the top of the ear where it attaches along side the head it quit for the most part. Just clip the hair short.

Very close pal of mine had cheat grass get in corner of his dogs eye. Luckily vet was able to get it out and the dog recovered with eye intact. He avoids areas with this grass at all costs now.

I hunt in cheat grass a lot and luckily haven't had any issues. However, our Griff is always trying to kill herself one way or another. Pet insurance is very cheap per month and has saved us a ton of money on emergency visits. Sound ridiculous to fall into a trap of more insurance, but if you are going to the vet a lot it can be worth it!

For those that wonder remember the Maui fires
Cheatgrass (also known as Downy Brome, Bromus tectorum) is an annual grass 6 to 18 in tall. The leaves and lower stems are covered in short, soft hairs. The flowers occur as drooping, open clusters that change color as they mature from green to reddish to tan. Germination takes place in fall or spring, flowering occurs in late May through mid-June, and plants are dead by mid-summer. Cheatgrass colonizes any open, dry habitat and has the potential to completely alter the ecosystems it occupies by completely replacing native vegetation and changing fire frequency and intensity. Cheatgrass is native to Eurasia and the Mediterranean. It was accidentally introduced into the United States in the mid 1800s.

No experience with these but I saw standing stone kennels running them last year. Look weird, but I guess if it works, looks don't matter.

Not very functional if you need the dog to pick up birds and doesnt protect the grass awns from the body and migrating to internal organs but better than nothing

There’s a relatively new herbicide called
Rejuvra which will eliminate Cheat for up to five years. It’s a pre emergent so it won’t affect established plants, obviously this does not help off of your own place. I put it down two falls ago on my two acres and
It works well.
