A buddy and I would like to try our hand at a DIY black bear hunt. Neither of us have hunted bear before, hunted elk and deer quite a bit, and feel fairly comfortable going anywhere within the lower 48, for a first bear hunt. We are looking for a little direction as to what state may provide us an OTC spring bear hunt and could provide us a fun hunt. Not looking for a giant, just something to get our feet wet and hunt a little in the Spring. East, West, where should we go? I've noticed that not all states offer Spring seasons. If anyone could give us an idea as to obviously a state, and maybe a unit, that would be really appreciated. Any other info would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, and good luck this fall!!

My first bear hunt was this spring spot and stalk DIY. State Montana area Lolo Nt. Forest. One of the hardest most fun hunts I have ever been on. Hiked 78 miles in 7 days. Really didn't want to hike that much. We just didn't see any bear sign for the first 6 days. I tagged out evening of day 6 and my buddy tagged mid mourning of day 7. Btw it was his first hunt ever. If you want any info on MT shoot me a pm and I'll get back to you.

We are located in SE Kansas.

Cleatus, was this a bow hunt? The hike doesn't bother us at all, and actually that's what we are wanting.
Did either of you carry a side arm? Whether its legal or not, I'm carrying one, especially if we are in grizzly or wolf country. Being a virgin bear hunter, would their be anything unique to pack, other that what we would typically pack for a elk or deer hunt? I suppose a Spring hunt could offer much different weather variations... I really appreciate your help and info, originally I had thought about Idaho, but will also give MT a hard look. Any additional advice, I would sure appreciate it.
