DIY Pull Outs

[WESTERN VA HUNTER]

This was my first attempt at sewing ripstop material. Pretty slippery at first and kept bunching up. Once I got the bobbin tension right, it sewed much better without bunching up .

Made a First Aid pull out and one for my Sawyer Mini Squeeze. I have several different colors of the 1.9 oz. Ripstop. Going to color code my pull outs so all I have to do is glance at it to see what is what. I may be just a little OCD... LOL

Nice work!! I did something similar a few weeks ago. I made a few different larger pullouts intended to house my food on my trips.

I sewed tab loops to mount inside my kifaru pack. These will help keep the weight of the food high and centered. Should work pretty good. I’m happy with how they turned out.

They look great.

I have a couple of "pro" tips that should help. You can attach pieces of ripstop together with cheap clear double sided tape and sew right through it. Just make sure the tape is narrow enough or your seam allowance is wide enough to hide it. This is a huge help on super long seams like on a tipi.

I assume you are using a home machine and not a walking foot. I found, when doing so, applying some tension to both sides of the fabric (indeed and outfeed), helps to prevent bunching and gives you a more even feed.

Educate me here - could a man take a pullout pattern, elongate it, and add sewn loops to one side and basically have bat wings?

Probably so, if you had a cargo panel and some compression straps to hold them from flopping. I've never actually seen the batwing in person, but that's pretty much what they remind me of from the pictures I've seen.

If you have enough fabric, literally make whatever you want. Today I shrunk down this same boxed pouch design and made a pouch for microspikes. Now they won’t clang around in my pack.

Didn’t have microspikes handy, but used these grippers to help get the same effect.

I ordered my zippers and pulls from Rockywoods. I don't have templates. I just decide on a size and cut the materials as needed.
