As I sit here recovering from a spinal fusion surgery I find myself with to much time to sit here and day dream about rifles and cartridges while I watch the baseball playoffs. I recently built a smokeless muzzleloader and I am considering selling off the barrel and turning it back into a centerfire. Why… because I’m bored and need something to entertain myself. The build turned out great but the muzzleloader barrel is heavy. I could replace it with a carbon barrel and the build would be a pretty kickass mountain rifle. Would be a Antelope to Elk rifle. I already have a 300 win mag and 30-06 so there is no real need for another cartridge just a want. Something like a 7-08, 6.5 prc, 6.8 western, 7 saum, etc. I’d be open to anything as long as it’s a short action cartridge. Would like something lighter in recoil.

Here is the build specs as it sits.
Remington 700 action (started as 6.5 Creedmoor)
.473 boltface
Brux .45 smokeless barrel
Hank's Precision V2 muzzle brake
HIS ignition
Hank’s recoil lug and barrel nut
TriggerTech trigger
Hawkins bottom metal
AG composite Alpine Hunter
Kampfield bolt fluting
Kampfield bolt knob
Hank’s Precision scope rail
Vortex Pro rings
Burris Veracity 3-15

Should also add that I do reload and have a ton of .308 bullets since I reload for my 30-06 and 300wm.

The 6.5 PRC is best in a medium/long action, so I'd rule that out. A .260 AI would be cool if you want a wildcat. A 6.5 or 7 SAUM would both be great but you will need to change bolt.

I’m currently in love with my 7-08ai. Drives a 140gr absolute hammer bullet at 3003fps.

Build specs are:
-Rem700SA. Trued by Phoenix Custom Rifles
-Proof sendero lite .284 CF barrel 8 twist 24” chambered in 7-08ai
-Mesa precision altitude stock
-timney trigger
-Talley light weight rings
-Zeiss conquest V4 4-16x44
-Silencerco Harvester EVO

All said fully dressed to kil with suppressor and bipod and 3 rounds it 9lbs 10oz.

Just to offer some inspiration because I think people should buy more guns.

Years ago I really wanted and almost built a 260ai. Just seems like a fun cartridge with a high cool factor! Thinking all this over really has me leaning that way again…

I too built a 7-08AI.

Mine is built off of a Tikka action and I went with a 20" Bartlein 1-8.7 twist barrel in Rem Sendero profile. Threaded 5/8-24. It sits in a McMillan Game Hunter with Mountain Tactical bottom metal. Lightened up the trigger pull with a Mountain Tactical spring, put a Burris Veracity 3-15 on it and it will launch 162 grain Hornady ELDX bullets at 2800 fps.

My main hunting bullet is a 150 grain Nosler ABLR that I also shoot at right around 2800 fps as that seems to be a sweet spot for this rifle.

.358 Win!
You've got longer range covered with the .30s, why not go for a short, light, handy-dandy thumper for inside of 300yds?
Make your own brass from .308 & a Hornady 200gn at 2600fps (+/-) stops a lot of arguments. Recoil isn't silly & it's very easy to load for.

7-08ai is a great cartridge. I’ve got two in hunting rifle builds, wouldn’t be surprised if a target barrel shows up at some point too.

The 7-08ai really does check all the boxes. The one hold up going that route is my son shoots a standard 7-08 in a Tikka Compact. May get confusing keeping our ammo separated. Maybe a standard 7-08 makes more sense for that reason.

.358 Win… never thought of going bigger. Hmmm
