Pretty sure a while back I read on their website that handgun has to be in its own case, but now I can’t find that anywhere. Would be nice if I could stick handgun in rifle case, but not sure if they’ll allow that. Don’t really want to buy a hard case for handgun that will likely never be used again.

Last time I flew delta I did place a rifle and handgun into the same case.
If your checked bag has a lock on it, buy one of those cheap Plano cases and place it inside your checked bag. Double lock (I lock the case as well).

It's best to call the airline, better yet, get them to respond in email and take the email with you to the airport.

I flew with them YEARS ago and had my rifle and handgun in the same Pelican case.

Yeah, I thought about calling but don’t want to take a plan of action that relies on he-said / she-said. A printed email definitely be better.

Yes, it's fine to have them both in the same case. I've done it numerous times. It doesn't matter the airline. TSA is who is inspecting your case. The airlines don't want anything to do with your gun case and are to the point where they request putting the declaration paperwork in at TSA inspection point instead of at ticket counter like they used to. They don't even want the case opened near their ticket counter. If you want peace of mind, talk to TSA, not the airline.

I just put rifle and handgun in same case in September when I went to alaska on my moose hunt. Flew up on Delta, home on Alaska. No problems, nothing said about it.

The last thing I would do is call and ask. One thing i've learned flying with guns a bunch is that airline employees frequently don't know their own damn rules. I've had to show them their own printed policy before. If their printed policy doesn't say anything against it, roll with it.

I've flown delta a number of times with pistol/rifle in the same case but it's been a couple years.

You can put 3 or 4 firearms one one case, doesn't matter. Get some chalk and draw out an outline for each, then use a sharp filet knife to cut out. For domestic flights the airlines default to TSA rules so they are the same. Only when you get into international do you see differences in airline policies.

What airports? I agree you can have more than one firearm in a single case, but I ask because the steps can vary as to whether and how you show the firearm, give them your keys/code, etc. If you can be better informed, it won't be a surprise if the TSA agent says "give me your keys so we can go inspect this in the back". I don't know how you can find out in advance, apart from other members' experience. I can tell you about Atlanta, Charleston (SC) and Omaha - and all 3 have different procedures.

You'll be fine, I've done this on multiple airlines.

To ticket agent: "this case contains unloaded firearms I need to declare"
They'll give you the slip to sign and then TSA is the one who does the inspection of the case.

It wont be a problem. I have carried two rifles in one case, a rifle and a pistol, and most recently a disassembled Beretta O/U and a Glock 20. Never had an issue. I have started using TSA locks just to simplify things.

Scope will come off the S&W (might hunt here with it this year) but this is my thought..

Or, maybe use this trip as a reason for a new handgun. Maybe Mack daddy revolver with shorter barrel or a 10mm??? This 44 damn sure big and heavy.

A long barreled revolver like that will give you plenty of velocity, but it is awkward to carry. I suggest a 4" 629 or Ruger Redhawk. Or, if you are satisified that 10mm meets your needs for stopping large predators, just hit the easy button and by a Glock 20. Consider a Hill People Gear Kit Bag to carry it in when afield.

When I travel for 3 gun, I have my pistol, AR and shotgun all in the same case with Ammo for the pistol and rifle.
