Darn Tough sock review

So about 8 months ago I told my wife I was sick of going through socks. At the time I wore underarmor boot socks and nike boot socks at work, Adidas and champion low cut socks with regular shoes and costco wool hunting socks hunting, fishing and hiking. I felt like I was always throwing away socks that either had holes in them, wore worn out and didn't stay up or stretching out. I hated it, constantly buying socks. I also am plagued with sweaty feet so I had an on going battle with athletes foot even changing socks twice a day. Something had to change.

I started researching different brands on hunting and hiking forums. On the hunting forums it seemed like everyone went with lorpen or smart wool. On the hiking forums it seemed like darn tough was the brand everyone liked hands down. Reviews stated that they wouldn't own any other socks, with AT, PCT and CDT hikers were wearing one or two pairs through the entire trails. One hiker wore the same pair on all three with them finally giving out on the last half of the final one.

So I decided to buy a pair of each, as I had an rei dividend burning a hole in my pocket. After looking at all three socks I decided to only buy the darn toughs for three reasons; there had the highest percentage of wool, had a lifetime warranty and were made in America.

So I started with one pair, tested them out on the Chuckar hills of eastern Washington in December with a foot of snow on the ground. If you know anything about Chuckar hunting you know your feet take a beating, rockslides, side hilling and lots of miles. Well afterwards my feet felt great, and they were dry, DRY! I didn't have gaiters at the time so I know snow was leaking in and I was sweating bad, but by the time I took them off they were dry. Test one passed.

So I went out and bought a few more pairs, tested them on a few duck hunts with leaky waders and they kept them warm, wore them at work a few times and on a few hikes and some 10+ mile Chuckar and quail hunts. They didn't fail, they stayed pulled up and most of all didn't smell, which my wife was most happy about.

After a few months I decided to take the plunge and purchase 7 pairs of their boot socks, a few more pairs of hiking socks and one pair of high calve hunting socks.
After almost a year I can say I am impressed, haven't had athletes foot since I switched! I wear black combat boots every day at work and my feet get wet often as I am in the coast guard and always around water but these socks are always dry by the time I take the off. They also never stink.

So my last part of the review will be about the warranty. Darn toughs warranty is unconditional, if they start sagging they replace them, if they get a hole in them or stretch out replaced. Know this I still didn't think they'd replace them when I found my dog had chewed one up. I contacted them thinking they'd tell me sorry but that's not covered. Well they didn't say that, they said send them in and will get another pair out! Yes dog abuse is covered. Sent me an email even when new ones were sent out. Can't get better service than that. O yeah there also made in America.

Hopefully I didn't ramble on to much and someone will find useful information in my review.

If these needs to be in footwear feel free to move it.

I bought 1 pair to try on a 4 day archery hunt this year on labor day. Just purchased set #4 & #5 today for my Idaho hunt. Love these socks.

I tried them in January this year and now own 4 pairs and will not wear another brand wool sock hunting and will not buy another brand again.

I only have the Hike/Trek crew height and I think they are a good weight for everything from early season through late because my boots change to adjust to conditions.

I liked the boot sock cushion for a while but just discovered the over the calf cushion at cabelas and they work really well with my boots when scouting so far. But honestly I don't think you can go wrong with any of them

Whats everyone's choice from their line? The Cool Max Full Cushion have my attention.
I bought a pair of the Cool Max Full Cushion and a pair of First Lite's Mountain Athlete Compression. Worn them around a bit over the summer and then took then on my sheep hunt and a few outings since. Both socks are light years ahead of the old Smartwool Mountaineering socks I used to run. I liked the First Lite ones so well I ordered a pair of the Mountain Athlete Cold Weather ones to try out this winter.

Darn Tough and First Lite are now my go to socks.

I bought a pair of the First Lite Mountain Athlete Compression socks today and they are not tall enough and where the seams end on the toe has a little ball and point that rubs. They feel like they will be a good sock but I think they need a little improvement before they will even come close to Darn Tough socks. They end right on the biggest part of my calf and I'm pretty sure they are supposed to end above that so the compression will work properly.

I love darn tough. Wanted to try the coolmax. Coolmax is said to be: 67% Coolmax® Polyester, 29% Nylon, 4% Lycra® Spandex...

So does it compare to the merino stuff from darn tough? Do you get the naturally antimicrobial action that helps with bacteria and odor?

I had some Cabela's Coolmax. I threw them away after getting the darn tough socks. They were the "light hiker" version. My feet always felt clammy after a day of work, hiking, or hunting, and they stunk for me. My feet sweat. They were even worse in Gortex shoes/boots for me. Darn Tough Merino for work & hunting now for me. I still have some smartwool in ankle socks. I use the Darn Tough 1403's all year long.

They are the best socks made. I have had the same pair for over 3 years and still going strong. I am trying to put a hole in them so I can send them back for their life time warranty:)
