Darn Tough sock review
So about 8 months ago I told my wife I was sick of going through socks. At the time I wore underarmor boot socks and nike boot socks at work, Adidas and champion low cut socks with regular shoes and costco wool hunting socks hunting, fishing and hiking. I felt like I was always throwing away socks that either had holes in them, wore worn out and didn't stay up or stretching out. I hated it, constantly buying socks. I also am plagued with sweaty feet so I had an on going battle with athletes foot even changing socks twice a day. Something had to change.
I started researching different brands on hunting and hiking forums. On the hunting forums it seemed like everyone went with lorpen or smart wool. On the hiking forums it seemed like darn tough was the brand everyone liked hands down. Reviews stated that they wouldn't own any other socks, with AT, PCT and CDT hikers were wearing one or two pairs through the entire trails. One hiker wore the same pair on all three with them finally giving out on the last half of the final one.
So I decided to buy a pair of each, as I had an rei dividend burning a hole in my pocket. After looking at all three socks I decided to only buy the darn toughs for three reasons; there had the highest percentage of wool, had a lifetime warranty and were made in America.
So I started with one pair, tested them out on the Chuckar hills of eastern Washington in December with a foot of snow on the ground. If you know anything about Chuckar hunting you know your feet take a beating, rockslides, side hilling and lots of miles. Well afterwards my feet felt great, and they were dry, DRY! I didn't have gaiters at the time so I know snow was leaking in and I was sweating bad, but by the time I took them off they were dry. Test one passed.
So I went out and bought a few more pairs, tested them on a few duck hunts with leaky waders and they kept them warm, wore them at work a few times and on a few hikes and some 10+ mile Chuckar and quail hunts. They didn't fail, they stayed pulled up and most of all didn't smell, which my wife was most happy about.
After a few months I decided to take the plunge and purchase 7 pairs of their boot socks, a few more pairs of hiking socks and one pair of high calve hunting socks.
After almost a year I can say I am impressed, haven't had athletes foot since I switched! I wear black combat boots every day at work and my feet get wet often as I am in the coast guard and always around water but these socks are always dry by the time I take the off. They also never stink.
So my last part of the review will be about the warranty. Darn toughs warranty is unconditional, if they start sagging they replace them, if they get a hole in them or stretch out replaced. Know this I still didn't think they'd replace them when I found my dog had chewed one up. I contacted them thinking they'd tell me sorry but that's not covered. Well they didn't say that, they said send them in and will get another pair out! Yes dog abuse is covered. Sent me an email even when new ones were sent out. Can't get better service than that. O yeah there also made in America.
Hopefully I didn't ramble on to much and someone will find useful information in my review.
If these needs to be in footwear feel free to move it.
