My buddy pulled this trick on me after he shot his first Javelina. A little sloppy knife work on his part resulted in me processing the rest of the animal while he sat around with a shirt wrapped around his hand. Well played, well played.

Muscle permeating stab wounds are serious injuries. Especially when one is dealing with a sharp instrument that is contaminated with blood/hair/dirt/contaminant from a potentially infectious source (like the field situation the OP described). The smart thing to do here is apply pressure and get the wounded party to medical facility for treatment. Other than striking an internal structure (artery or vein), the biggest concern is infection, which is no joke.
