Living here, I'm obliged to carry a Barney's frame. I just wanted something that'll do the freighter to day pack mode thing, and then have some features for carrying a bow.
My friend Jason is a bear and goat guide here and lives with a Barney's on his back and he makes his own bags, so I asked him to do one for me and it came out great. It's not a true batwing design, but the sides fold up in that fashion with a large central panel that expands when the bag is full. It's nothing ground-breaking, but I had him make the lid longer to cover my bow and had a Grab-It type thing permanently attached to the bottom that takes the place of the meat shelf and holds the bow. It's sewn to the bag and pins to the frame so it's load-bearing. He added a hydration sleeve and a couple small pockets to the inside so in day pack mode I don't have to drop everything into the cavern of the bag itself. Pockets are similar to a Barney's pack, but Jason tweaks them a bit here and there as well as running the horizontal straps straight to the pins so the pins take the full load.
Haven't weighed it yet, but it's the same or a bit less than a Barney's with a Pinnacle. Haven't measured capacity either, but it's 7000+ easy. Still gotta tweak the right height yet, but in the couple training hikes I've had it on, the frame carries as well as any Barney's.
He's made six or seven bags already. I'm trying to talk him into making it his winter job.
