Custom Build

At 70 I would like to do my first truly custom rifle build. I enjoy recreational bench shooting and load development but mainly I am a hunter. I have rebarreled several Savage and Remington rifles but now would like to start with a custom action and would like to stay under $1000 for the action. I am looking for action recommendations in this range. Have been looking at Aero Precision Solus and the Bighorn but I'm sure there are more to consider. Thanks in advance

The Solus is what I would start with. Aero machines the receiver tightly enough that barrels are interchangeable without messing up headspace. And with the replaceable bolt head, even changing cartridge-based diameter is fairly simple. It's about a $900 receiver, less than half of most of the precision customs.

I've seen lots of custom gun reviews but this article in guns and ammo from October of 23 shows some impressive group sizes with factory loaded ammunition and almost everything shot very well.

I've seen lots of reviews on custom guns where the group sizes are 0.9, and 1.4 and all kinds of stuff. And I'm thinking to myself I can beat the crap out of that with a $600 off the shelf rifle with a few tweaks.

The solus was one of the few precision rifle reviews that I thought was somewhat impressive.

I have 2 Zermatt Bighorns. No complaints. Exchangeable bolt head and CRF. Remington 700 trigger and stock, lots of options there. They are a little heavier than some.

No experience with it but the Coup De Grace action from ARC is about $900 I think.

Bighorn Origin gets my vote. I’ve ran 4 different prefits off the same action. Headspace has always been money. Tooless bolt assembly, interchangeable bolt heads, rem 700 footprinted everything.

I can go from my 6.5 needmore fun gun to my 7 SAUM hunting rig in sub 10 minutes.
