I'm interested in getting a pair of CC skis to supplement my snowshoes/"slow-shoes" because a lot of the places I waterfowl hunt this time of the year are a mile or two from the nearest road and just for general over snow travel. I've done a bit of digging on the subject but hoped some of you could help me with a few questions.

My big hope is I can set up skis with a binding to allow me to use my normal hiking boots. I really don't want to have to use special boots and am not sure how much you really need special boots for travel on mainly flat ground. The only option I've seen is some old military surplus type bindings. Am I selling myself short going this route? Simplicity is more my motive than cost, I can get all this gear for pretty cheap at a used mountaineering gear shop.

If using hiking boots is a bad idea, what's a good system to get? I know there's quite a lot of options when it comes to bindings and boots.

I'm 5'10 and 150 lbs, any recommendations on ski size? I'll be 100% on untracked snow and probably not well packed snow at that. I'd think something a bit shorter and wider would be more what I'd need to make maneuvering around trees and brush easier. I have a pulk so shouldn't be carrying too much added weight. I've even thought about just getting second hand powder skis as I don't foresee even needing skins at this point.

Thanks for any help and I'm sure as I learn more I'll have more questions.

What this guy said. You can also buy the universal bindings by themselves, and mount to a set of skis. It will take using the Google to find those bindings. I have doing debated that myself. Also look at Hill People Gear, I believe they have some discussion of this exact thing on their website.

Awesome, thanks. There goes my hopes of being happy with any old used setup. Those altai skis are sweet and that binding setup is exactly what I was looking for. Time to start saving up. Thanks again.
