I usually don't hunt during rut. I do own a couple hoochie moma's and a Bugle, but can't seem to master a mouth call. Any references for a easy to use, hand held cow call, that is easy to master. I have Cabelas and Sportsman's in town here. If I start researching I'll go into analysis paralysis I'm sure.

I prefer diaphragm calls but have several "bite and blow" calls. I like Bugling Bull Game Calls' Temptress. I assume their other similar call is equally effective. I've also Used Sceery and Primos. There is still some skill required but it shouldn't take long to master if you listen to recordings of real cows and practice

I am no expert elk caller but I do think the fact that I learned how to use a diaphragm to call turkeys as a young kid accelerated my learning curve. For me Turkey calls are a little easier to use (maybe because the tone range on elk is wider). You may find it helpful to start with a Turkey diaphragm and then move to Elk.

I know, but some will always have a hard time with then. The open reed calls are so easy to use, and work well.

I've had good luck with the Sceery Ace-1. It's a bite reed, easy to use and sounds great.
I can't seem to get a mouth reed to work, no matter how long I practice, just doesn't sound good to me.

Thanks to all. I have a Bugling Bull Tube now so I think I'll give that Temptress and also pick up and practice some with a mouth call. I see benefit of mouth call as a lone Hunter, particularly in close with a bow, but this will be with my Dad and I. I know you archery guys have more fun with the Bulls screaming in your face so maybe this Oct 1 opener will find us some of that and get me hooked.

You will like the temptress. easy to use. Great call. I have two...well lost one, bought another, then found the first. I was afraid of diaphragm calls but practice a lot on my commute, and actually prefer them now.

The elk Temptress is probably the best bite call I have ever used. You can add a sense of excitement to it or just not. It works. and it is a little louder than I am using a mouth diaghram call.

Last year I picked up a Bugling Bull Matriarch Cow Call but since we hunted the second rifle season I didn't use it much. It is easy to use and projects well. We are hunting the CO 1st rifle season this year and expect to use it more.
