Northern BC average moose
Completely boned out
With ice in cooler
How many 120 qt coolers are needed?

My only experience is with elk and I can get a large cow, boned out in two 120s with plenty of ice to keep cool for multiple days.

with that as my only experience, I am thinking 4 coolers maxed out and five being a better option

You'll have about 500-550 lbs of meat after day 5 post harvest. Bone weight removed = 35-lbs average.

Airlines generally keep max bag limit of 100-lbs. 88-96 quart coolers are best (holds about 75lbs). the 120 qt coolers hold more than 100-lbs if maxed out.

Thanks Larry, I will be driving so will not have to worry about the airlines restrictions. So, with your numbers I should definitely plan on taking 5 coolers.

And now I am thinking 6, if I need to bring a cape home. Do they make a 10’ bed truck, my 8’ is getting smaller and smaller

Personally yes..6. One of my groups just got back with two big bulls (62" and 58") and bought 9 coolers (96-qt i think). One hind quarter off the biggest bull will take 2 coolers deboned.

I'd take a 12 CF or larger chest freezer and a gen set to run it...6-1/2' bed pickup with room for packs, other gear, etc.. Freeze the meat up in manageable quantities in plastic bags to you can get them out if partially frozen. Run the freezer until the meat just starts to harden, then as req'd to keep it in that state. Works well for me...YMMV.
