Concerns of taking Tylenol PM while hunting in the high country

I was having discussion with a fellow hunter about backpack hunting.

I mentioned I always have trouble winding down at the end of the day and never sleep well. I always have thoughts about what to do, my plan for the next day, sore feet, etc... that keep me from sleeping well

He said pop in two Tylenol PM and that will do it. I thought I had read something about taking sleep aids at high elevation. I could be making this up, but that is why I have always stayed away from them.

Has anyone heard something similar or do others take sleep aids with no problems?

I have family that have taken Ambien and have some funny stories to go with them. With some of the stories, I wouldnt want to be wandering around the high country hopped up on Ambien :)

BTW I just sent you a PM... check your inbox

I have the same issue with falling and staying asleep while backpacking...haven't found a good solution yet. I've always avoided sleep aids because they make me so tired and drowsy the next day I can hardly function. I'd also be interested to hear how other people work around this issue.

I usually am so exhausted i need something to keep me awake long enough to get my Mountainhouse cooked and ate. I live in MO and the first couple of nights I do wake up once or twice and feel short of breath. Kind of odd. After I get acclimated..no problems. If a person has sleep apnea I think it would be in there best interest to avoid a sleep aid.

I'll pop an Advil or similar at night to counter soreness or a headache the following morning however I've never needed sleep aide in the backcountry!

Tylenol pm for me. Not sure but I haven't noticed any side effects. I don't wake up drowsy either but limit myself to one. I pack one for every night but usually only end up using a couple. It does help with the aches but I use to have to race my hunting partner to sleep his snoring is ridiculous but after a pm I hardly notice any more

I've used tons of stuff to help me sleep. I have issues sleeping big time but the best one I use is the Nyquil Zzzquil

That stuff works great and no long term issues.

X2 for the Zzzquil, I started using it right when it came out, because I have to start work a lot of times at 1 or 2am and need something to help me relax and fall asleep before I usually fall asleep at home. I've also used it while camping several times with no issues and no drowsiness the next morning.

Really like it.

The active (sleep) ingredient in Tylenol PM is Benedryl. Tylenol is hard on your liver and there have been recent debates as to what is a "safe" dose. What we know for sure is that drug companies err on the high (profit) side. For pain use ibuprofin or anaprox (alleve). My doctor friend tells me stay away from Tylenol especially when high exertion and some dehydration is possible.

For sleep I bring the small hard Benedryl tabs and cut them in half which is half what is in a PM. Should have some along for allergic reactions anyway.

Yeah I have had some interesting conversations with the wife so she says. I have never woke up wearing her underwear yet so I'll continue to risk it backpacking.

So you say. Wait till the photos come out................................

Diphenhydramine (benadryl). I don't need anything when in the backcountry (sleep like a rock) but on flights that I need to sleep, this does the job very nicely. No hangover.

you usually will sleep good the next night so don't sweat it...it is normal and to be expected sleeping poorly the first night or two.

First night I sleep like crap, second night on, like a baby. I'm surprised no one recommended Crown Royal.
