Always have a plan, if you don't that is how you will mess things up.
We use turkey calls. Just a simple short series of yelps. No answer, stay put. Yelps back pack it up and move on. I wouldn't use an elk sound. A single chirp would be a good way to stop an elk, would hate to have my partner come walking over as if I were trying to stop one. Too many variables in calling situations to use an actual elk sound as the que IMO.
