I am planning a DIY backpacking hunt in Colorado unit 77 or 78. We plan on hunting the Weminuche wilderness area. I would appreciate any help I can get. I am looking at either the Middle fork trail head, or the Williams creek trail head. I plan to scout the area in late July, or early August. I am interested in finding out how crowded these trail heads get during archery season, and weather my attention should be directed at another area of the Weminuche. We have thought about unit 54, and hunt the West Elk Wilderness area as well, but would need to be able to draw it in the leftover draw in August. Any help and or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I just drew for GMU 54, so I will be gathering info on that unit, if you are interested in sharing info should you go the 54 route, send me a pm

You should expect to see outfitter traffic going into each of those TH's. The TH near Rio Grande lake has a fair amount of hikers, backpackers and hunting traffic. That area is big so you can get away from the outfitter camps but it will take some extra effort.

I don't think 54 has a lot of tags left over so I would check the list. Check with teeton but I thought his friend from Colorado would buy his tag as soon as they were available. If u are a non resident that may be a way to insure u get a tag. You just have to find a resident willing to buy it for you that you could trust. Should be a few guys on here that would do it. Keep track of any rain fall in that unit all summer long and you will know where to hunt. One area may get a lot more than others.

Ya it sucks right now. I have spent a lot of time scouting an area, and now its on fire. We will probably try to get a 54 tag, but it may be difficult this year. I would expect some of the 78 hunters to be looking for new spots.
