My friends and I are heading to the Flat Tops with everyone else as we didn't draw our first choice tags. We are excited to get to hunt elk for the first time and we are going to try to make it a backcountry hunt but nothing outrageous (2-4 miles).

With that said I have some specific questions on GMU 12, 24, 25 that I am trying to find answers on. I have spoken to the CPW office in Glenwood Spring and emailed the biologist as directed. I have tried to contact the Meeker office but have never gotten through and all messages left have been un-returned. Obviously this is a busy time of year for them so I don't have any hard feelings.

I am wondering if someone that has first hand knowledge of the area would want to answer some questions via message.

Thanks,

Thomas

Don't know a lick about the area but the best advice I could ever give you, just go hunt, don't over think it just go out and hunt. Don't contemplate too much on where to go and how to get there, you've done research and you've got some places picked out you'd like to go so just go and hunt it hard for 5 days.

I have not hunted those units but have hunted the flattops before. First off good job in getting the 1st rifle season instead of the 2nd. Much much better chance of success imo. I would look at the colorado atlas on the colorado dow website and find the summer concentration areas for those areas. They are generally somewhat accurate. Find a place close to those areas without any roads right by. You do not have to go into the actual wilderness area to get away from people. Imo the wilderness area is somewhat overatted. Find a place 2 miles between roads instead of the actual wilderness area. I would look for areas that are a mix of dark timber and aspens. Good luck post pics!
