I'm looking for a few 120qt coolers for elk/deer hunting. I have plenty of other good coolers for normal everyday use, so these will only really be used for hunting. Do you guys have any experience with this line from Coleman? The pricepoint is really nice, but there aren't too many reviews. Do you think the darker color will speed up the melting process?

I use the Coleman Extreme 120 qt but I'm not sure it's a 6, maybe a 4 or 5.
Mine are dark green and have worked great for hauling cooled or frozen meat.
If the weather is warm I lay a sheet of the reflectix insulation over the top of the meat before closing. It helps.

The Extremes are good coolers and are not as heavy as the "premium coolers". (I own a smaller 50 qt Yeti for weekend trips but not hauling elk meat. It's HEAVY for it's size).

I get my Coleman extremes 100qt from Walmart for around $50 but they don't look as fancy.

I had planned on buying them from my local wally world too, but as of last night they are out-of-stock. I guess the xtreme 6 has some new fancy insulation, so for just a few $$$ more I figured I'd give them a shot. I'm planning on loading them up with milk jug blocks and dry ice before I go. Would it pay to wrap the cooler in reflectix too? I've got a bunch leftover from a recent cozy project, so I guess I could build a cooler cozy as well.

I just bought a 120qt Extreme 6 yesterday at Wally World......$57 and change. I had tried the Igloo from Costco and it didn't even keep my milk jugs frozen for 3 days, so took it back. This Coleman seems awfully thin in the walls. For the price I don't expect much, but we'll see. I'll be using mine on a scouting trip, leaving tomorrow. I do expect to break the handles the first time I pick it up full of ice. They angle over the molding which I know will break with any pressure. And I'm sure I'll break the cheap plastic hinges almost as quickly, but I don't really need another high dollar cooler for this set up, so I'll give it a go.

I think the big diff from the 5 to the 6 is the insulated lid. Pretty sure the lid on the 5 isn't insulated, guess I could drill mine and see.

Find some nylon tie down strap and put it under the hinges. The lids will have a little play but they won't go anywhere.

That cabelas link in the OP has seven reviews as of today. Judging by what I see there I would pass, but if you take care not to lift a heavy load I am sure it can work for you if you are not far from fresh ice. Your use should determine what you get and only you can decide what's best for you.

I have the cooler and have seen no real difference between it and the green rubbermaid 120's that I use every year to keep my Elk and Antelope. Add ice, drain water. Repeat for 2 days and then the temp will stabilize and less ice will be needed.

I just spoke with coleman. The only difference, aside from the new colors and price, is the added insulation in the lid. They said the 6 six still had SOME ice after 6 days, and the 5 was out of ice after 5 days....

I have no idea what differentiates that cooler from the regular 120qt Extreme Cooler........other than "signature". The details don't really say what the difference is.........except twice the price. It looks identical to the one I bought just a different color pattern.

I think the lid insulation is the only real diff from the 5 but they also sell a 6 that is tan or something which is the same and has insulation in the lid.

Not to hijack the thread, but in response to dotman's post on the Esky.

I have one of the Esky coolers by coleman. It is the 155, and so far I'm impressed. It was purchased using BassPro points, otherwise I would never have spent the cash on it. I have no hunting or fishing field use on it yet. However, we have been using it every day for about 2 months now. We have a large garden that we sell excess produce out of and we have been using the cooler as a stand in when our fridge(s) is over full. I will be taking it with me on a Striper Fishing trip next month.

I toyed with the Yeti, but I chose the Esky
* BassPro points used to purchase
* Price point per size vs Yeti or others
* Designed & Made in the USA
* Tie down straps do not pass through the lid
* Included cutting board, used a lot so far

FYI: Esky has a 20% off purchase price through August 27th "ESKY20"

The one I bought is a "6" and was half the price of the one you posted. So I have no idea what the difference is, other than color. The shape and size is identical.

Roy, I don't see a 155 on their website, 135 then jumps to 205. Wow, just saw the price of the 205 at $749. I picked up my IRP 200qt Marine cooler for less than half that price, but I got it at 50% off so I guess that's about right for MSRP these days.

My bad. The 135 is what I have.

We are using 3 of our "blue collar man's" coolers right now as well. I would say the comparison between them will be pretty subjective though. Lots of variables with what I'm using them for right now. In and out of them constantly.
