Does anyone have a picture of their Cimarron pitched that shows the sod skirt? Based on all the pics I have seen, the only time the skirt can function is if you set up the Cimarron using an extension kit to allow the anchor points to be elevated off the ground otherwise the skirt would just bunch up. Or am I incorrectly assuming that the sod skirt on the Cimarron is to ones found on a traditional tipi? I think of a sod skirt to be a narrow, vertical band around the base of a shelter.

Like this? It's only a couple of inches that hangs down below the stake points. Nothing I'd really consider a sod skirt. I do agree with your assertion that you would need the tensioners and cordage to use these in any way. However, I find using tensioners a must have with these shelters anyway. It just creates so much more room, helps mitigate condensation issues and makes pitching much easier.

Thanks. That confirmed what I was thinking. I am getting ready to step up to a new shelter and I am on the bubble going with the Cimarron or a 4 man tipi.

Never used a "real" tipi but I love the Cimarron. It would be close quarters but you could actually get 4 people in the Cimarron. Not sure about a 4-man tipi.

Just to clarify: Are you asking if the sod skirt on a Cimarron can be used as a traditional sod skirt? If so the answer is yes - Use the inner loops for staking tight to the ground. This allows a few inches of the skirt to lie on the ground to be covered with dirt, sod or snow.

For the first few years I'll be using whatever I choose for solo trip but that will likely changes once my two boys get older. I am leaning towards the Cimarron because its a little lighter and appears to be a better configuration for my needs.

The purpose of a sod skirt is to cover with debris and seal the edge of a tent. In fact when I worked at a wall tent shop they called them "bury strips" rather then sod skirts.

I can't think of a time except winter when I would want to bury edges of my floor less shelter so allow even less airflow.
