My old Caldwell has given up the ghost, it served me well for several years but it was a pain in the ass, setting it up on a tripod, walking out to see the reading on the display was the worst unless I was lucky and I was the only one shooting at the range.

mom thinking of getting a magneto speed, I like how it just clamps to the barrel and you get the display right there at the bench. I realize that this can change the POI but if it gives accurate readings and cuts out all the bitch work that came with my Caldwell I could overlook that, I mean really is it that big of a deal? Find a load that shoots well then chrono it?

Am I missing anything? Is magnetosphere a good option? I don’t really want to drop the $$$ on a Labradar at the moment.

thanks!!!

I like my Caldwell and at 15 ft, no problem with reading it.

Went back and forth between the two and thought chrono was best for me. I'm shooting for groups at same time and can see me shooting arrows thru it too.

Lots of positive reviews for magneto speed if that's all you want is speed.

From the research I’ve done, the Magnetospeed is very accurate but does change poi. Apparently there is a way to set it up so that it is not strapped to your barrel but I believe you need to purchase a different bracket of some sort. Labradar is awesome but very expensive. I had used a shooting Chrony for a while and they are garbage. Wasted a lot of ammo with it not reading and throwing errors. I’ve been using a Prochrono Digital for a week now with good results. It hasn’t missed a shot yet

I like the sporter I have, incouldnt get myself to buy the radar either. So it does change poi but groups seem to stay the same size from what I’ve seen so far

I just sold a magnetospeed and it worked great and was super reliable. That said, I always hated the poi shift and having to do velocity and grouping separate was a PITA.

Just got a LabRadar. It kicks ass and have had no issues yet. I was able to pick up a demo unit they had laying around for a descent discount.

What fatbacks said.

If you are a shooter and load for multiple guns and like trying out new stuff the Labradar is the way to go. I had a chrony and was unreliable. I got a sporter MS that works consistently but POI Is real- it hard to group test because the MS will slightly shift during shots if not strapped super tight, so I wonder if my groups are being affected.

I would love a labradar- easily Switch rifles, shoot groups, and can instantly tell if that flier was also way off on velocity or just me 😂

labradar all the way.....but honestly 97 out of 100 will be quite happy with the MS.

the MS-strap it on now and then or when you change up a load. every time i set a rifle up i set the LR on the bench.

Been running a magnetospeed since Christmas, the only negative is that it will usually affect accuracy. I shot 3-5 to get velocity then remove for sight in and start dialing.

Thanks everybody, it is tempting to get a Labradar but they are over 500 dollars, probably worth it. I was pretty sure I wanted a magneto speed but now i’m just not sure I’m half tempted to just order a labradar before I over think it and talk myself out of it...

I couldn’t justify the cost of the LR. I have a MS Sporter and like it alright.

My method is backward what has been suggested by others. I load test for velocity with the MS first, then test the best loads for groups without the MS. After I make any tweaks to the load for group size I shoot 10+ over the MS for final velocity data and call the load done.

My guns shoot about 1.5 mil high with the Magnetospeed on. It’s not the exact same every time on every gun, but close enough that I can hold under with my mil reticles and know which groups go with which target dots. It’s not a guessing game every time.

I went from a shooting chrony to a labradar. there are deals to be had if you look for a gently used book. I was able to save several hundred dollars by doing so. I wasted more than that on ammo with errors on shots and other issues I was having with my regular chronograph. I shoot a decent amount but not every weekend but still feel the cost is justified.

I love my Caldwell. It saves everything to the app on my phone, so it's very easy to read. The LR chronos that I've been around, haven't done anything that my Caldwell won't. I don't know if the LR sends the data to your phone or not.

i think nearly everyone could do it like Low_Sky and be happy if the LR did not exist.. you can set it up while other people are shooting around you, too.

the Caldwell -yea it works most of the time [ i have one]. sun and clouds can mess with it often. i learned to use mine in late afternoon when the sun was just right. i have seen several set up with lights over the unit, too.

one thing about it is at a range with other people you must be careful. and neither can be used when you are in a match, which does not affect very many shooters, just sayin.
