Does anyone here have or know of any issues with this truck? I realize it's not the full size duramax but I don't tow anything over 5,000 lbs & when I do it's like once or twice a year & not very far. I'm seriously considering a 2018 model. It has a 7600 lb tow rating & gets decent mileage. Just curious if anyone has one or know of someone with one. Any info on them would be awesome, thank you!

Paul,
Their is a Thread on this topic just a few weeks ago. With that said, I own one. I can answer any questions you have. I have a 2016 model. I love it. No issues. 26mpg in city and I regularly get over the rated 30mpg on highway. In fact I get 32 when I set my cruise on flat highway.

Jeff, thank you! I just did a search & cannot locate the thread? Maybe it has a different title, do you recall if it has a similar title as mine? Thanks!

Just checked out the thread, really not much on the Colorado! I have a Tacoma so am not making comparisons with it just curious if others feel the Colorado Diesel has been solid & reliable. Kinda curious about it's towing capability too if chipped or add a tuner! Thanks!

We have a 2005 Colorado that's a pretty sweet little truck. I never wanted bigger pickup... then I got my Silverado. I never towed anything with the Colorado but I would be perfectly happy if it was all I had. The new ones are really comfortable inside as well.

Paul, I came out of a 2012 Tacoma. I loved my Tacoma. The power and the pulling is no comparison. Not even the same sport. Since the vehicle is only 2016, we really can’t compare the reliability of a proven Tacoma.

Here is my take:
The Duramax is a Isuzu design/motor as the 4 cal is the most widely used diesel in the below 14,000 GVW commercial can over truck. I know the motor is not exact but I have 100% confidence the motor would/will run a million miles .

However, I am not convinced the truck would last that long. I already have small squeaks that drive me batty. They are so slight and my wife can not hear them but I do! My Tacoma never made a peep after 5 years and 80k miles.
The duramax is a nicer truck. More luxury I mean

The Duramax truck feels much heavier driving it. It’s not on paper but it feels it.
The break -
No comparison- Duramax kills it and will stop on a dime on any grade. The break difference is shocking.

The entrance angle and air dam on the Duramax sucks. SUCKS! Tacoma wins on that.

Tacoma is a proven truck. Built like a tank. No brainer. I hated the changes they made at the Taco motor. It did
Not have the power that the Duramax does. Even on just accelerating.

Pulling- Duramax all day
Road noise - Duramax all day
Breaking- Duramax all day
Luxury - Duramax all day

Reliability- Tacoma because it is proven
Off road- Tacoma because if clearness - Duramax air dam should be taken off
Squeezing- Tacoma all day
Ride - Duramax all day
Seats - I like Tacoma better - I have leather

I miss my Taco. Inwant another one.I love my Duramax.
Gas mileage - no comparison.

If I was stuck on an island and had to chose a truck for the back country, I would pick Tacoma. If I was stuck on an Islamabad had to go off road, pull things and needed good gas mileage, I would go with Duramax.

Reliability is just unknown long term by the motor will outlast YOU!!

Not but it feels

these are the two trucks I am comparing right now..
A Tacoma TRD Pro vs Colorado ZR2..... I do a ton of miles yearly and feel the diesel might be worth it. However I am worried about the Chevy longevity and quality control. I absolutely hate little nickel and dime bull shit going wrong that requires dealership time.

Jeff, thanks bud, that's a lot great stuff there! I appreciate you taking the time to respond in such an awesome manner!

Trial153, I hear ya, I wouldn't want that either but I do know those little things can happen with any rig these days! I've owned 4 toyotas & none are bullet proof, it's just part of the game! (grin) I notice the ZR2 gets quite a bit less mileage. The only real world plus that it has is the front/rear locking differentials. Even that isn't big, in most cases you cannot drive with any speeds when in that mode. I can & would add shocks, lift, Tires & Wheels for much less than the 7500.00 difference in the Z71 & ZR2 -- I'd chip & tune it too, I'm just a big kid at heart! (grin) Thanks!

That right there is my complaint with just about all the newer vehicles. My 28+ year old Toyota 4x4 has been beat to heck over the years and there still isn't a single squeak or noise from it besides the speedometer cable when it's cold. The truck is just "tight" and solid. IME the newer GM's (Chevy and GMC) squeak before they leave the dealer lot. It's like they're made out of bad plastic inside the cabs. My dad had a Colorado with the gas engine and that thing drove me crazy every time I was in it with the noises, and it had less than 50k miles on it. I've ridden in Silverado's that were less than a year old that I would have driven off a cliff if I owned them. My 17 year old F-350 has one rattle that I can and will fix soon (the passenger defrost vent insert), but thank goodness that's it, or it would be sold or over a cliff. Even our 2004 Honda Odyssey is an absolute rattle machine.......I don't drive it or ride in it.

But other than that, I'd be OK with trying out the small Duramax.

Keep in mind the zr2 actually comes with real tires, so there's another grand right there. One of my main annoyances is the crappy oem tires most companies put on pickups.

If you want feedback on long term reliability search on the Isuzu dmax pickup from aus/nz, pretty much a us colorado

Long time car guy here.

In buying anything new, pair your purchase with a manufacturer extended service contract.

No one knows what a new vehicle has in store. No one ! We only compare peoples experiences. Good reviews, we then follow the reviews. But , lemons do happen. With the extended ESC, at least you get coverage to smoother the reliability over, transfer it if you sell it.

Now Tacoma been around a bit. Proven great little gas truck.

Diesel Colorado, new entrant. My office for a time was located @ a Chevy dealership. Those little Colorado’s were getting good reviews by the sales team who were getting good reviews from their customers.

I wouldn’t be afraid of buying one. In fact I looked them over. Liked them. But I’m a full size guy, Tahoe Z71 fan. But if the right deal came, I wouldn’t blink twice @ a Colorado or a Tundra/Tacoma/4Runner. Good stuff. Just secure your future assets with long term warranty by the manufacturer, not the less expensive that supposedly covers the same after market warranty.

That diesel Colorado sure looks good on paper....my only experience is with ford, chevy, toyota full-size trucks.

Overall thats my beef with Chevy...its just not built to the quality of a Toyota. My partner gets 21mpg in his 2017 Tacoma.

I seriously can't believe Toyota hasn't imported their wildly successful Hilux diesel to the US.

FWIW, Ford is coming out with their lion diesel 6 cal in their F150 for 2018...about the same specs as the Ram eco diesel.

Yes it does look good! We've had 9 Chevy vehicles over the years with virtually no serious issues, just the normal little stuff! They seem to be a pretty solid rig. I was curious about the Colorado diesel more than its surrounding parts. My Son has a 2008 Silverado Duramax, his 2nd one, they've been great but I was curious more about its little brother! (grin)

Not a fan of extended warranties, I bought one once years ago & all they do when there is an issue is spend 24/7 to find a loop hole where something doesn't apply, at least that's been my experience. My present 2005 Tacoma is a great little truck but far from not having it's creaks & groans & things going out. Not complaining but all rigs have those normal wear & tear stuff. That's a big reason I prefer to do all my own mechanical work! Thanks guys!

Bruce, they run aprox 38,000 for a 2018 Z71. That's quite a bit less than their full size duramax rigs. I'm more a mid size guy these days because I have no need for a full size. Just researching the little beast at present! No way would I look at a Ford diesel these days especially a new edition one where the quirks still need to be worked out. Thanks!

What crazy is it has a higher payload then the eco diesel Ram. I was really considering one but the full size interior space is prime with a young family. Some pretty cool lifts for it and duramaxtuner.com really can wake the motor and trans up to a safe range so you don't start blowing stuff up and still get better mileage.

To me the crew cab had about the same amount of room as a full size extended cab. I ended up going with a Nissan Titan XD Pro4x Diesel and am very happy with it but mileage isn't outstanding.

You could make a little duramax a pretty nice off-road daily driver for the $7500 more the SR2 costs. Check out Laura Buick GMC outside of St. Louis MO, probably worth a flight as they regularly have them for $34k or less.

I knew the Nissan had the smaller cummins, good to hear you like it! Are they more expensive? That's a heck of a price 34.000 -- Do you have a name or # of a dealership with that price? Thanks bud!

Keep an eye on them, when I was looking the all terrain was as low as $32k last year. Shop New Vehicles in St Louis at Laura Buick GMC

The Nissan is a tad more spendy, mine retailed for $55 but I got it for $42,800. But Nissan does funky things with rebates, it is based on your home zip so that you purchase local I guess, so I may be able to get a smoking deal but you may not and vis versa.

Just went through same comparison shopping. Wanted new Tacoma but willing to look at chevy Colorado. Drive Colorado for work truck - sounds like going to come apart. Entire drive line just rebuilt at 70k. My Tacoma has 141k & nothing wrong. For same price bought 2017 tundra with 0% for 60 months. Take a hit on mileage but what a better ride & more space for gear. Mileage not that much worse than Tacoma.
