Care for Spotter

So may be a dumb question but I have never owned a spotter that had a removable eye piece. Is it ok to store scope with eye piece attached or should i separate during periods of long storage. If it makes a difference, i have the Kowa 774. Thanks

I store with mine on....only have 1 eye piece any way. I own a Meopta, I'd be dubious about changing eye pieces or leaving it off anyway due to chances of getting dust inside it perhaps. I doubt ill need another eye piece, and I doubt ill ever take it off.

Just like camera lenses. The more you take them off, the greater the chance of getting dust inside. Why would you be concerned with leaving it on? It's taking it off and putting it back on that wears the mounting surfaces. I think I've had mine off once in over 2 years on my 773.

Yep, I follow the above advice. The only time I think of removing mine is for travel. It packs a little smaller without the eyepiece installed

Kowa 884 here. I leave it on. I keep objective and eyepice caps on inside the kowa field case and store it all in a kifaru spotter pocket. Yeah I like to keep it as clean and dust free as possible.

Always leave it on and put covers on the lenses when not in use. I use compressed air keyboard cleaner cans to remove dust without touching the lenses.

Best thing you can do is leave the eyepiece on, and buy a filter to protect the front objective. Way cheaper and easier to replace a scratched filter than a scratched objective. I put a Breakthrough X4 UV filter on mine as soon as it came out of the box. Front lens cover still mounts onto it.

I don't recall the sunshades that wind out have threads either, I might look later.

I'm not sure on an S2. Should have it listed on their specs what size the filter would need to be. I know on my 773 it takes an 82mm filter.

You might see some glare that you wouldn't see otherwise due to the flat glass surface, but no it doesn't change performance. Get one that is multicoated.

I keep my spotter together. I’ve only taken apart for the couple times I’ve moved from place to place in which it was packed in its original box.

If you go cheap on the filter, perhaps. I can tell you that no one who has ever looked through my scope ever knew there was a filter on it. You can get glare on any spotter if you're glassing into the sun, there's no magical pill for that. My filter is made from Schott glass and has 16 layers of coating and a 25 year warranty. Extremely tough and scratch resistant.

Mine is a Breakthrough X4UV filter. My sun shade still fits over the filter when extended. It doesn't impede the use of the sun shade having the filter on it.
