Canceled hunt - Looking for last minute outfitter

Hey All,

I'm getting ready to head out on a Moose hunt in 2 days in Alberta Canada with the same outfitter that I went elk hunting with last year. I just got a call that the allocation that I'm hunting in is being ravaged by fires and they just lost their camp. They have 2 clients hunting currently and had moved them to a new area and were greeted by the Forestry division prepping for the fire to head that way. They basically told them that they had to leave by tomorrow and that the fire is about 12km and heading that way.

My buddy / the outfitter was basically in tears just now telling me that I have to cancel the hunt.

I'm looking for any type of hunt that I might be able to jump on last minute for October. Elk, Moose, Antelope, Mule deer..ect. I know its a stretch, but I'm looking to salvage my season the best I can.

Any recommendations would be HUGE. I just found all of this out 20 minutes ago, so I'm scrambling a bit to see what to do
Thanks in advance for any help. I'm not even sure this is the best forum channel to post it, but maybe someone can steer me in the right direction.

They absolutely will. But I just spent the last few weeks getting everything ready for a hunt this fall and would love to be able to go somewhere if possible.

I have absolutely nothing to add here except this:

There's a lot of OTC bear tags in CO and if you aren't looking for an elk or mule deer there are places you could go look for bears (without trying to wish them into more elk-y spots) and it would beat staying at home.

Tagged, not because I have anything to offer you, but because I don't know what I'd do in your shoes and I'm wondering how you'll fix it.

I appreciate that man. Will keep the thread posted on if anything moves forward

Maybe @Cliff Gray knows someone with an opening?

For Canada opportunities, could reach out to Jay Nichol and see if he knows anyone with openings. Figure the way Canada outfitted hunt tags are allocated that might have a higher chance.

Ok thats helpful. I reached out to an outfitter in BC and another in ontario. I’ll be making calls the next few days. Appreciate the hell

I’d try a hunt service like hunt nation. I’d usually recommended steering clear of middle men, but for last minute stuff they would probably have some options. For Alberta you could reach out to Redwillow, I doubt they are fully booked. Should be plenty of whitetail opportunities in OK/TX.

Call Steve at Steve's Outdoor Adventures. Sometimes he has cancellations and last minute hunts available. He e-mailed me on an elk hunt available for October last week. He only uses top tier outfitters too and pricing isn't terrible.

As suggested above, Jay would be worth a call.

All the other good folks I know here in the states are in the thick of it now... even if they have cancellations they typically won't even put them out this late in the game. wish I could be more help. If I hear of something, I'll stick it up here.

At a minimum there are Probably some late season (Nov/dec) rifle hunts available in NM w landowner tags. I’d call Epic Outdoors and ask them. They will be able to give you some options for sure

I get emails all the time from Shoshone Adventure Consultants about cancellation hunts. I have no idea how I got on their list or if they are reputable or any good, so caveat emptor, but they apparently have some options.

Munsey Bear Camp recently posted a last minute mountain goat cancellation. Mountain goats on Kodiak are an undervalued hunt.

It’s fall bear season on the Alaska Peninsula right now. Last minute cancellations happen. Might reach out to a few outfitters see if they have any last minute openings. Nate Turner and Matt Thoft are both good operators that may have openings as they don’t get the press that their quality merits.
