I saw tonight they have the 2016 Razor HD 16-48x65 spotter for $699.99.. How much different is this older model than the newest model for the average eye? seems to me a good buy? I currently have a Meopta 82mm spotter and it is a bit heavy on the pack so I am looking to reduce the pack weight. Wondering how much Vortex has improved there scopes in 3 years?

The one I had was garbage. Sold it and got the 553 kowa. That little thing is magical

There is an eBay store that has the same scope for 644. I am curious as well as to what would compete with this scope in the same general price range. For me a spotter wouldn’t get used much and I could use the saved cash to upgrade binos

I had one up to 2015. I liked it over all and it had good resolution. If I saw something with my binos I couldn’t identify or needed a better look at I would switch to the spotter. The razor worked very well for that. Overall I really liked it for that niche.

I have had the swaro 95mm atx since 2016. I never had them side by side in the field. In my experience where I would use my binos to find something that would catch my attention with the razor my tactics switched with the atx. I now use the binos to glass the open areas and now use the atx to in the shadows of bushes and brush. I have picked out antler in brush with my atx and don’t think I could have with the razor( distance was a around 2k away I’d guess).

The swaro is the best in class for spotters but each jump in price gets you less and less per dollar spent. If you need a spotter it would fit the niche at a great cost saving. At that price it believe it is one of the best bag for buck spotters. I have no comparison to the newer models glass of gen 2 v. Gen 1, but it really depends what your looking to get out of a spotter?

Personally the Vanguard 65 is better and still cheaper. When I first had my Razor 65 I thought it was good, till I looked through other options. That said I’ve seen some say they prefer the gen 1 over the gen 2, I’d look at other options.

More than any other well known brand, Vortex seems to have a huge variance in glass quality throughout their models.

I would recommend checking out the athlon ares or if you can find the cabelas krotos
