I am looking for a good unit to hunt the high country that is over the counter. I grew up hunting CA but only private land up north by Covelo. I currently live in CO (military), and still hold CA residency but don't belong to the club that held the private land anymore. Not looking for anyone's secret spot, just a good unit to get away from the people and get into some good deer. Didn't get drawn for mule deer over here, so I thought I would make a trip back home. Thanks.

A quick look at a map should give you plenty of ideas..... With that being said I'm with Solitude on this I'd be hunting Co OTC

I don't think Colorado has OTC Mule deer rifle tags but Idaho has leftover deer and elk tags along with bear and wolf all overlapping. I went with Montana this year because it has a later season but I'm hoping to do Idaho next year. Otc elk in Colorado would be hard to beat though IMO.

If you're bow hunting as your name implies you could grab an AO tag and hunt most of the state (except the draw zones of course).

I will be hunting CO elk this year in September and have a little extra time in August, so that's why I wanted to get some info on public land hunts. I have only hunted A and B zones, never ventured off into D or X

I would just pick up a B tag and look into one of the wilderness areas there. Check out wilderness.net for a list of all wilderness areas.

There is plenty of good public land all around Covelo.

That is correct sir and some good bucks too:
