Ok folks I'll spill the beans. The problem solving answer to this conundrum is......eat your trash. Seriously, eat it. Then you can just poop it out and all is well. Don't bury it, and smoke weed while you're doing the deed. That way you can fit in with the new wave CO camping enthusiasts (also known as homeless hippies), and you can blame it on being blazed (might also help your appetite for trash).

There, I revealed the answer.

Burn the heck out of my trash and then I bury the ashes. Zero evidence I was there. What wont completely burn is bagged and packed out.

Even Andrew Shurka says to burn your trash every few days to keep the smell down.

I have zero concerns about the byproducts of burning my camp trash. I get a hot fire going with plenty of wood and then begin burning trash. What does concern me is any leftover noncombustible material such as foil bits, oxygen absorbers, small pieces that escape burning. I don't want to leave a trace of that stuff behind. The easiest way to deal with that is to clean up after the fire...scrape up the remaining unburned pieces and bag them to carry out. Even after 15 days of camping (and then burning my trash) that small residual stuff doesn't amount to more than a couple tablespoons as long as I burn it hot and keep tending the fire.

If access to dry wood is a problem then little choice exists but to collapse all the hard-to-burn stuff and put it in a sturdy plastic bag to bring out. Paper and burnable stuff can still be burned in its own small fire.

I carry a lighter and burn my tp every time. I don't want anything left around to spoil the wilderness experience. Guys who leave behind cans, glass, and trash are not good outdoorsmen and don't deserve to experience true wilderness. I won't hunt with anyone who does that.

Fn hippies!! This site has a few which i guess is to be expected considering the demographics. And more of them are starting to hunt I guess.

Tsnider you visit the Standing Rock protest camps yet in ND? You remind me of some of the type that would be there.

I don't usually burn any trash when camped out. I don't buy into the human induced global warming. But with that said I don't usually burn the trash. Seems like it usually makes a mess and leaves trash behind. I'm not a hippie that's forsure, but I also don't like finding a bunch of trash in the forest.

Leaving trash in the forest is unacceptable . Bitching about the fumes from a camp fire is what earns a person hippie status from me

I'm certifiably a douche. President of the league of douchey trash burners.

I burn it all, and make sure its all burned in the field. Whether I burn it in the fire/camp stove in the field or burn it in a trash barrel incinerator at home the outcome is the same. I drive by a landfill a couple times a week, and the trash that blows away ends up somewhere... ditch, trees, bushes, etc. I'd rather they burn it so I can't see it at all.

If it doesn't burn, I pack it out. When I leave my campsite, you can hardly ever tell I was there. I pride myself in this.

If burning trash really bothers you, I suggest that you strictly travel in a organic gluten free biomass powered unpainted wood framed bicycle with free range organic recycled byproduct tires. You should also stop consuming anything that has non-recycleable, including the dangerous energy drinks that must be making you dilousonal. Support a ban on all plastics and ethyls, and polys. Never use disposable packaging. Make sure you DO NOT use modern medical facilties or products (tip- They incinerate the materials and only some need filtered). Definatley don't take an asprin or ibuprophen in the field and then take a leak because you're introducing all that toxic materials into the beautiful biosphere. Do not eat something that isn't local to your hunting area and take a crap. Never ever use fireworks at home to celebrate the 4th of july (suprise- They contain chemicals that are released into the air). Do not even consider getting a plastic bag from the store or ever go through a drivethrough when you have the munchies.

Just imagine how wrong it is to own a pack with a poly frame that used a toxic chemical to be formed. Or a metal frame that used heat created by dirty energy in forming and forging process. Make sure your tent material is made without chemicals and when you wear it out make sure you have it encased in concrete so it can't ruin more of the environment in the landfill... crap... concrete has toxic chemicals in it too. I hope you don't use a firearm when hunting... The noise pollution and toxic fumes are so unpleasant that they ruin our backcountry experience.

Seriously, taking care of the wilderness is a immense responsibility that we all need to undertake, but calling people a douche for burning zip lock bags in a fire is the dumbest and funniest thing I've had the displeasure of reading in a long time. Your pot has called our kettle black here.

For the record, I don't think you're a douche. ROK.jpg

I certainly won't. This whole Chicken Little "The Sky is Falling" mentality with the environment is so far overblown, I don't even give it a second thought. Heck, we used to poor our used motor oil out in the road to help keep the dust down when I was a kid. I'm even a proponent of getting rid of the EPA.

Honestly guys I am a little surprised by some of the comments on here. A hippie is the last thing anyone would call me but I do have a degree in Wildlife Biology and I am a high school science teacher. Those things basically mean nothing and do not add any more creditability to my opinions but it does mean I have research and continue to research these types of things.

Burning garbage is not good. Plain and simple you should not be burning garbage. What would happen if everyone burned their garbage? Let's light up all our landfills and see what happens. Incinerators are a different story.

Also the mentality of "I can do it because it is just small it doesn't matter in the grand scheme" is so flawed. If something is wrong then we need to stop doing it, no matter on what scale. if everyone stops then eventually we change our ways and it stops happening on a large scale as well.

We as humans are doing major damage to our environment and if you think any different then you are just burying your head in the sand.

As long we are living we are going to effect the environment but we have to start changing our actions so that we minimize that. If each person starts making small changes then it makes a big difference.

I would think as hunters that we would want to do what's best four our environment. Yes, I know that we cannot completely eliminate our impacts but we can choose certain actions that will minimize them.

My rule is it depends on where I am and who has been there before. Truck camping in a fire ring - burn it. I also know of old outfitters camps that I use in the backcountry when they arent around, there are fire rings there - burn it. But if its a "virgin" area without an established fire ring I burn everything but the mountain house bags and other non combustibles and carry it out.

I haven't had a fire in my camp (backcountry or base camp) in over 10 years. I even haul out all my trash from base camp......but not because of environmental reasons.......it's just easier to put it in a trash bag throughout the hunt and haul it out when I leave. I never have time for a fire during archery season.

Tsnider, I recommend you take all the negativity here and turn it into something awesome. Rebrand some edible sausage casings as "ultralight, zero impact bags" and you have a business. Or some variation of that idea. In the end, your concern, even though it is trying to solve a case of malaria by rubbing benadryll on your mosquito bites, is shared by a massive market.

\yes i drive a truck. a big lifted shitty gas mileage toyota. all of our weapons and a lot of our gear is manufactured with chemicals that probably arent good for the environment. but what little people can do to help is helping.

Then be the first to start by trading that gas guzzler in for a prius, wear hemp and stop showering.... until then you're hypocritical. I'm not throwing insults but seriously....

The point isn't that I'm better than anyone dude. The point is it's a shitty big to do and if it's one less shitty thing. I'm not saying I'm better than anyone. I met some guys that were touring the US from Germany and for instance they turn the shower on, turn it off, soap up, rinse off, and that's that. It's environmentally friendly. Apparently that's what almost Germans do. So should they stop trying to save the amount of waste water because they flew on a plane to get here and drive a truck across the country?

This thread reminds me of George Carlin's piece about the earth eating plastic:
