I went bear hunting after work today and was surprised to see three different bulls that still had their antlers. One I didn’t get a picture of looked to be a big five point. I thought they all would have dropped by now. The pic was by hand through my binos, which is why it isn’t very good. DB950197-D9C6-426B-ABDF-F8DFBFDB34FA.jpeg

I saw a nice 4x4 mulie buck in Palmer Lake CO yesterday whose antlers were still covered in velvet. His antlers were a mess but definitely velvet. Tonight there were 9 bucks in my yard that all had 1” nubs.

I've found fresh raghorn sheds and seen rags still packing in late April first week of May. Bulls 2nd-3rd week of May with velvet already sprouted has also occurred.

Not uncommon at all. I never really look for elk sheds before mid April
I guess I have not seen any bulls on my previous early spring outings. I learned something new. I am not much of a shed hunter, but now I have an area to check out in the next few weeks.

I got a picture of a nice 5x5 last week on a camera I have out at a turkey roost site. He was a with a couple other bulls who had all dropped.

This was from a few years back but middle of May. Somewhere in central Utah.

There’s a few smaller 250-280 bulls still packing around here as well. But we’re also still getting snowed on (SE Idaho)

It’s interesting the timing of elk dropping. I think spikes typically drop quite late. I’ve seen enough 5-6pt bulls packing while also finding 5-6pt sheds same time to wonder if it’s partly genetic or something

Found some 3.5lb antlers 5pt yesterday, didn’t see many elk but only bull I saw was a spike. Haven’t found a 4pt antler yet this year

I have always felt the real weird ones were the spikes in dec still in velvet. Killed a 5 pt one year after thanksgiving that was still in velvet.
