Many years ago I used a cheap bushnell scope with an adaptor and a nikin coolpix to take photos of distant animals. I've used a bridge camera to good effect ever since then, but the need has came up from time to time to take a photo of an animal sitting way off in the distance. Usually this is something fairly large like a golden eagle, mountain goat, etc that I can't get close to because of access issues. So I would not use the scope constantly, and it would be mostly used at roadside stops. Ideally, I'd like something that let's in quite a bit of light for earlier and later in the day. I was hoping to use it with my iphone but if going old school with a point and shoot and adapter is still recommended, I could do that also. Because it won't get a ton of use, ideally I'd find something that I can combine with a "good enough" tripod for 500ish.

Forgot to add, I am willing to consider used gear and thanks to anyone who can offer advice.
