I am getting back into archery after 18 years. I shot all through my youth and don’t even remember my first bow. I stopped shooting in high school and sold my bow when I moved out of my parents house. Last fall I picked up a Diamond Edge SB-1 for $200 to see if it’s something I want to get back into. After slinging a few arrows this winter, I have decided that I do want to bow hunt. I took it into the local shop a couple weeks ago (Screaming Eagle in Wasilla) and had them put an HHA Tetra RYZ, Hamskea Everest, and a new peep on it and then check timing and wherever else they thought it needed. I’m planning on adding a tight spot quiver in the next couple days for spring bear. After that, I’ll be looking for a bow upgrade, I think, and will move all these goodies over onto it. Obviously I could just go in and drop $2000+ on the latest and greatest but I’m in the middle of dropping $3600 on a barrel/can/scope for my backpack gun so my hunting funds are a little tight. What kind of bows should I keep an eye out for that are great values (similar to what a Tikka is in the gun world), or are awesome bows but often overlooked for the newest and best? Not afraid of buying used, but I don’t really know what I’m looking at.
I’m 5’10 and have a 30” draw (EDIT: 28” draw. I’m going to leave this because I’m not too proud to not admit when I’m wrong, but clearly I don’t know what I’m talking about with my DL). I have no need to shoot more than 70lbs, and like bows on the shorter end for packability.

Screaming Eagle is a solid shop, good atmosphere, me and my family shoot there weekly.

To your question I’ve always liked Matthew’s halons, which can be found in a 30” ata. I’ve had a couple of the 32” ata in the 70 and 80 lb limbs.

If looking for carbon I have a Hoyt rx3 at is 30” easy to shoot I’ve had it from 70-83#s and still felt easy on the high side.

If you’re right handed finding a used bow shouldn’t be too hard, but if you’re like me and shoot left handed then it might be a little harder to find many bows in this area.

If you are will to shoot a longer ata bow a mathews traverse is a good bow for hunting and target. Can be had for about $700 loaded. It’s a 33” ATA bow.

Good luck! And damn, 5'10" and a 30" DL! I wish mine were that long. I'm 6'1" with a 29.25 DL. So jealous.

Are you able to get together a shop and shoot some different bows? I've found this to be the best way to figure out which bow you like the most.

Haha I’m probably wrong on my draw length!! I thought they said draw length was maxed out but I’m probably wrong. I’m far from knowledgeable.

The one bow shop is 3 hours away, the other is 4. I’ll could do that but I don’t want to buy new and really don’t want to waste their time.

30" draw at 5' 10" would be something. Can you scratch your knees standing straight up? Walk through a standard door frame straight without getting stuck?

To find your draw length:
Measure your wingspan with your back against a wall from middle finger to middle finger. Have your wife or kid mark this and get a measurement. This number divided by 2.5 will get you in the ballpark.

Lots of good bows can be had from Classifieds if you know your DL and what to look for- you don't.

Best advice for a first bow is Marbles above- If you are pulling the string down the side of your face ....you are over drawing. Facing forward at full draw, you should be looking through the center of the string with your dominant eye. Lots of internet diagrams or pros shooting tourneys to learn from

I’m definitely not over drawing. I’m pulling right to the corner of my mouth. All of my form from shooting as a kid came right back within a few days of shooting. My 6 shot group at 30 is back to fist size and still shrinking.

It’s literally everything else that I don’t know, and what I don’t know that I don’t know. My neighbor is a pretty accomplished bow hunter and has spent some time going over my kit and form to make sure I’m good there.
