For a total newby to Elk hunting and backpacking which books would you guys recommend? I am constantly pouring over the internet forums, the Colorado DOW hunter atlas and other features, reading everything I can find about elk hunting. Looking for some good books on the subject. Thinking about Cameron and Dwight Schuh's books, any others?

Thanks for any info.

My humble opinion is that you can learn more valuable info on sites like this than any book. Books can generalize but these posters have actual experiences, all different, that give you the knowledge you need to be successful. You can search any topic on this and at least 3 others that will set you on the path. Equipment, techniques, everything.

Bw, shoot me a PM with your address. I'll send you Cam Hanes' book, Backcountry Bowhunting. Just pay it forward to someone else when you're done with it.

I downloaded an eBook called, "DIY Elk Hunting Guide" by Dan Allan. It gave a really good base on what elk do in general, how to study the statistics, how to analyze different areas of the country and their landscapes, elk habitat models, strategies for different seasons, etc. The analysis of stats seemed more geared towards rifle hunting, but the info overall provides an excellent foundation in my opinion. I think it was around $10. I have Backcountry Bowhunting as well. It is a great read and really makes you want to get out there, but is a little lacking in the details of how to hunt elk (i.e. their seasonal patterns, where they bed and feed, how to hunt thermals, etc).

There's a guy on here "Matt Dworak", read his book (Public Land Elk Hunting) after my first elk hunt. Wish I read it before. I got it on kindle. I also read Mike Eastmans book, but think that Dworaks would be better for backpack hunters, especially beginner elk hunters.

Don't overlook the info right on these forums in guys hunt recap stories. Reading both those and talking to guys who have taken elk with bow have had the biggest impact on my success...you start to pick up on patterns and small tips that prove true once in the field.

Good Luck!

I'd concentrate more on books about elk behavior, habitat, patterns, and biology to start with. Learn all you can about your quarry.

If you are wanting to call elk in archery season check out Elknut's Playbook.

Backcountry Bowhunting is a good read, but the gear suggestions will be dated now. Honestly, you can find more good information on forums like Rokslide than any of the books out there.

Thanks everybody. I have ElkNut's playbook, worse than wolves, and scouting dvd. Just trying to absorb everything I can this year so that maybe my brother and I can at least find and see some elk. This will be our first time backpacking and elk hunting. Still haven't fully decided on an area in Colorado. I did elk hunt once in the 90's from a truck camp and saw a few elk about a mile away. Had no idea what I was doing, well kind of still don't. But I've learned a lot more already about where to look and what elk like.

Thanks again.

Another author to check out is Mike Lapinski he has a couple of good books out from the 80's that still apply..........you can never learn to much about your quarry....always something new to pickup from a multitude of resources.

I've got a couple of old VHS tapes of Mike Lapinski, very knowledgable guy, and he's fun to watch as he really gets into his hunts.

Elk Essentials by Bob Robb is a cover all type book geared towards beginners, along with the already mentioned Public Land Elk Hunting by Matt Dworak. Both are really good.

me too......"North American Elk Ecology and Management" most guys don't want to know what can be read in this book but I have to say that the more I learn about the who what when where and why elk are doing what they do, the more dangerous I become ;)
