Headed out on Wednesday & as much as I've practiced with my reed calls, all I can successfully imitate is the sound of a badly injured cat being gang-raped in a trash can.

Are there any readily available (thinking, maybe, Walmart?) easily mastered, cow calls?
I don't have time to mail order anything & there's not a massive market for them here in TN! :D

Stop in a sporting goods store out west in elk country and there will be a big display of elk calls just like deer calls back east.

Not much difference between most, zero difference between some. I prefer the elk inc rubber band style over any open plastic reed call but I also use a Carlton fighting cow which is what the primos hyper lip is modeled after. Hyper lip is found everywhere. Get one with the tone converter on it, then stuff that full of Kleenex to soften it up more.

Last season I bought a Primos Cow Girl (bite and blow) as we walked out of the Sportsman's Warehouse in Cheyenne just on a whim.
Much to the chagrin of my hunting partner, I "practiced" as we drove to camp.

I'm sure it's a joke to the experts but I got multiple bulls to respond. The fact that the rut was in full swing undoubtedly helped and of course, I had a cow tag.
If I had it to do over, I would buy two. It looks like the bite part could go south pretty easily.

Everybody should have a cow girl with them. It is versatile and easy to use. Not a joke to me.

I have a handful of different ones made for elk but the best call I have found is the green piece of the promos lil dog coyote howler pack. I bite down with my top teeth to get the tone I like.

Leave the Damn hoochie momma at home. I've never seen elk lose interest in a set up as fast as I have a hoochie. They are over used and every elk on the mountain is keen to it. Hell I'm not an elk but can tell a hoochie momma at a quarter mile.

I've used the Carlton hyper hot, promos single, and my current favorite is one from bulging bulls... who's ur daddy or some stupid name. They are all pretty similar. What trouble are you having with the diaphragm calls? They are hands down your best bet for almost all elk sounds. Maybe we can help.

Here's my 2 cents. I have and use the hoochie mama... super simple... if you're looking for a good single reed call go with the Carlson Fight N' Cow. Most bite and blow calls don't sound like cows, they sound like calves. That is the best cow call you can buy IMO. It immitates a lead cow and is very nasally. It also happens to be one of the cheapest, and it's been around since the early 90's. It's easy to learn and master and it will work. But you still need other calls as well like the cow girl to help create a realisitic herd structure. but go to wal mart or other local sporting goods store and pick one up for under $14.00..

I will add to my comment.... IF you are in an are that is public/general with lots of pressure... leave the Hoochie Momma at home. If you are in an area that has low pressure you are probably good to go with it.

Where we hunt is near the Air Force base and I am convinced they give everyone that enlists in the Air Force a hoochie and tells them that all you need to do is push it, CONSTANTLY, to hunt elk. HAHA
