I’m looking to buy a bipod for a 2020 elk hunt for my xbolt 300 WSM. I’m looking at a basic Harris. Are there any others I should consider? Any thoughts on what height bipod as well?

if weight is an issue Id run no bipod and just use your pack as a rest. If weight isnt an issue id still run no bipod and use the pack as a low bipod and pack a tripod or shooting sticks if you need to shoot over brush or small crest.

If you want a bipod either way theres nothing wrong with a harris (legit harris) in a 9-13" height.

I'm looking at bipods as well and was questing what height to get. I took my rifle and got in the prone in the position I was most comfortable. I just had my son keep stacking books under the rail on the forend until it felt perfect. Then I just measured the stack of books, which ended up being 7 inches. That was aiming perfectly straight so I'll be looking for one in the 6-10" range to account for inclines/declines.

Here is my list

The harris 1A2-L is the best all arounder in my opinion. Decently cheap, well constructed. Buy from midway or somewhere other than amazon to avoid getting a fake. Doesn't make the gun too heavy to shoot off hand and is pretty easy to remove.

Spartan Javelin. Very expensive IMO for what it is. But the best lightweight I have found. Its not very fast to deploy as you have to snap it into the gun everytime but it comes off the fastest. Its decently adjustable and pretty stable.. The best ultralight.

Atlas - Very Expensive, super stable. large range of adjustment. weighs as much as a brick. not my favorite leg adjustment system. So heavy IMO it makes shooting off hand all but impossible.

accutac - Very Expensive, super stable. large range of adjustment. weighs as much as a brick. a nice leg adjustment system. So heavy IMO it makes shooting off hand all but impossible.

I have used a Rugged Ridge Outdoor Gear Extreme Pod in the 7"-10" version for a few years now. I also have the 17.5" leg extensions which work well for seated shooting or getting above tall grass in certain terrain. Pretty pleased with it, especially with the claw feet. It's really light which is nice for carry, while being stable and strong as well. I'd like to try a Modular Evolution and an Accutac in the future.

This comparison review may help you out. Rokslide Bipod Shootout

My favorite HUNTING bipod and the one I always carry if I'm backpacking is the Javelin.
For normal target or compatition shooting I prefer the Modular Evolution.
If budget was my number one priority I would go with a Harris.

For height I prefer a bipod that will go at least up to 12" when hunting. I have had many times where I have been maxed out either due to angle or grass in the way. I can't think of a time where I've had an issue with the bipod being too tall.

I absolutely hated the spartan, I wanted to love it and it was lightweight which was pretty much it’s only redeeming feature.

I hated how it didn’t stay attached to the gun and sometimes when shooting it would fall off due to recoil.

Harris bipods are nice, but it can be difficult to ensure proper loading and control recoil hop with them. The atlas bipod gives you a little play and I find it easier to properly load the bipod in every soil type. That being said, I e started using the new magpul bipod and think it’s just as good as the atlas and much cheaper.

I’ve liked the rugged ridge bipod but the price is steep and you have to drill your stock to install the mounting rail.

When magpul starts selling the sling stud mount version, I’ll buy one.

Fully agree on the Magpul as the best budget option, my two were both under $85 shipped if I remember correctly.
