Bino Harness

I'll start this thread off with some in progress pictures before final assembly. After making some pullouts based on other threads on here I figured I'd tackle a more complicated project and make my own bino harness. I made the initial patterns using adobe illustrator, I say initial because things changed mid design. I'm using 400d packcloth for the shell, 1.1oz silnylon for the inner and 3mm airmesh on the rear panel. The padding is some 4mm craft foam I found on amazon, it's okay but I'd use something else if doing it again. All the hardware and fabric except the coat hook came from rockywoods.

Obviously I really like the design of the fhf harness but I'm cheap and like using my thread injector. Besides a custom fit for my nocs I also wanted fully enclosed sides, and a place to keep spare cartridges that wasn't my pocket. I'll post more pictures of the finished product after I complete it tonight. Any questions or advice at this point are more than welcome.

Update with finished product photos! Unfortunately I broke two needles (schmetz 80/12 microtex) in quick succession trying to do the final assembly, I ordered some singer titanium universal so I could use 90/14's and had to wait for those to ship before continuing. The larger needle size was definitely better, I had no issues sewing the rest of the seams together. The next step is to make the harness but that's going to be a copy of the fhf harness with the addition of spacermesh on the underside of the shoulder straps.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with it, there's a couple places where things don't work quite as well as I'd like but it's much better than my old harness. I'd also say that the fhf harness is worth the money for the stitching quality, it was damn hard trying to keep everything straight and aligned.
Thanks for looking!

Wow that looks really nice. Congrats on a successful project. I’m definitely not that creative.

Fantastic job! Would never know you didnt buy this off a store shelf! Makes me want to get a sewing machine for the workshop and see what I can do.

Thanks all, it was definitely a challenge figuring out how to put all the panels together and sequence it. I haven’t managed to field test it but so far everything seems to work well and it fits my pair of binos perfectly, although I am tempted to make another one to improve things.

For those who think a project like this is out of reach, it ain’t. The only sewing I’d done before was making some kifaru style pullouts and box pouches.

How noisy is the fabric? Particularly interested in noise below freezing.

A cool feature would be a pocket that goes right below the elastic for the bullets so that they can't fall out the bottom. I love having rounds handy like that but loose them when there's nothing underneath. YMMV, and maybe the elastic is tight enough it doesn't matter.

Anyway, very cool, looks awesome!

The fabric is about as noisy as 500d cordura but I couldn’t tell you about below freezing, it’s fairly warm here in CA this time of year. It’s the 400d packcloth from rocky woods.

I had thought of adding a little “pocket” to cover the shell tips but decided against it, the elastic is plenty tight as it is.

Very nice, your craftsmanship is inspiring! What kind of materials did you use for the both the black padding and brown webbing?

The padding is some 3mm cosplay foam I got off amazon, it’s okay but I’d use something thicker and denser next time.

There’s a couple different types of webbing, 1” standard nylon webbing and 1” elastic webbing, both from rockywoods.
