I have normally put something about 40mm objective and 12x or less on my rifles and never thought I was missing anything. On hunt for new scope and looked through a few 50 and 56mm scopes. Holy cow it was nice and easier to get behind. Seemed to be less tight of an eye box and eye didn’t seem to struggle as much as with my normal choices.

Wondering if this is related to age? My dad seemed to always ask for bigger and more magnification the older he got saying he could not see. On a recent elk hunt I was setup to take a shot at 721 yards. At 12x (max) I was comfortable I could take shot but have to admit was wishing for some more magnification. I passed on shot as could not confirm legality with optics I had available.

The other thing that I've found that helps with old man eyes is an illuminated reticle. I have always used a 3-9 or 4-12x40mm and went to a 4-16X50mm with an illuminated reticle and it definitely helped. I would rather have more power than I think I need.
