I happened to sleep outside a lot in the mountains in the last 3 winter hunting seasons.
After some experience I realized that it is essential to stay under a shelter that could be a stone or a tree regardless of whether it rains or not, and not to expose yourself to the wind.
one piece of equipment that I find very useful is the US army goretex bivy cover , which depending on the temperatures can be accompanied by a light sleeping bag and an insulating mat underneath.
I don't find the tent useful unless they bring small children with them.
