Pretty easy to get hooked once you start shooting. RMS is a good place to check on bows, Big Jims be another good place, either one you should be able to call em up, let them know where you,re at, what you have in mind, what sort of budget you,re tryna stay inside. First bow, could,nt hurt to go light, 30-35-40 lbs. Pretty easy to fatigue yourself over shooting, and you end up using muscles that mostly don,t get tapped otherwise. Never did get into compounds, if I remember correctly, you ususally lose a little bit of draw length when you switch over. And usually in the first year or so, you will gain an inch-half an inch of draw, shooting a recurve or long bow.
Samick Sage, or something similar seems like a fairly safe bet, let you establish a baseline, figure out what you like and don,t like in a bow, get lighter limbs, let you work on your form and have fun. Few months, year down the road, get hunting weight limbs for it, or sell it for a good portion of what you paid if you decide you want something different.
As far as bowyers, there as so many great ones out there the hard part is picking one.
Got into recurves 3 years ago, got my first long bow last spring, and it,s Irish twin takedown on Boxing day. Been in danger of getting my official GUN NUT card revoked ever since, they are just a lot of fun, a great exercise in patience and humility, and nobody calls the cops if I,m shooting a bow off the deck.
Check out Leatherwall or Tradgang for web sites.
Don,t think it would be a bad idea to keep shooting the bow on hand in the meantime, get a little feel for what you,re looking for.
