Just wondering what you all use for a light weight jacket in your packs. I'm looking for one that's under $100, has pockets, packs down well, weighs in aroudn 12 oz or less and has some durability. Right, I want it all. I'm open to any input even if your suggestion doesn't meet all the criteria above. I'd want something that stays in my pack mostly but that I could live in while hunting in semi brushy country if it rains for 2 days straight. I have a late October Muzzy tag for deer in the Oregon Cascades and it can rain for days sometimes. I was hoping to go lighter and cheaper than my First Lite SEAK jacket. I was looking at the Kuiu Teton but wasn't sure if it was the best buy for the money. I'd also be interested in something in a solid.

Thanks!

Light weight, waterproof, breathable, and less than a $100 is going to be a challenge....

I still think the Sitka Dewpoint is the one you compare any alternatives to when it comes to light weight performance for mountain pursuits.. I'm sure there is new stuff out there that is close, but for true real world performance its the starting point. IMHO

The Precip is a good light jacket, but 2 days of brush busting wouldn't do it any favors. I treat my current one nicer, my first one got tore up fairly quick. It's nice light rain gear but not super tough. I do consider it better than the Cabelas Space Rain it replaced.

I use the Precip for when I might get rain and its to hot for stouter rain gear. It goes on day hunts where it might rain, might not for example.
I use a Sitka Cloudburst when I want something tougher that can be a wind shell over a puffy in cool but not cold weather. My jacket is 22oz
The SEAK is for cold wet weather. Its more wind proof than the Sitka and weighs 27oz.
The Helly Hannsen stuff gets used when its really dumping rain and breathability isn't a major concern. Mostly around home or when I'll be glassing or predator calling in wet snow all day, not walking to far.

I try to avoid rain pants if I can. If I can't get by without them I use Cabelas Space rain pants, Kuiu Yukon rain pants, or the Helly Hannsen bibs. 90% of the time it will be the Yukons if I need rain pants. Gaiters and fast drying synthetic pants are what I use if at all possible, the Yukons are hot if I'm active but have hip vents that help.

I think kruptek Poseidon is on clearance for $95. I have no experience but seems to have a good reputation.

Outdoor research helium has served me well in rain and wet snow. Not a brush buster though. I like my OR Foray for heavier use.

Military surplus has a light rain jacket and pants usually can be had for under $50 each. May be a little heavier then you want but they are probably pretty durable. I have a 3 layer Gore-Tex army surplus jacket and pants and they take some good abuse from me

Agreed. I own several very lightweight rain jackets (OR, Rab, Patagonia), but for hunting I use the Dewpoint- it's heavier than the ones I listed, but it's also sturdier and has more features- better hood, zip pits, etc For backpacking, day hikes outside of hunting season, I'll use one of the lighter ones- if I'm carrying a rifle, it's the Dewpoint

I’ve had a Black north face rain jacket I bought at their outlet store in castle rock Colorado two years ago. I think I paid about $25 for it and it’s as durable and works as well as the two FL jackets I’ve owned.

The Kryptek Poseidon on clearance is a very good option. I’ve also had luck with the Marmot Precip and LLBean packable rain gear.

Dewpoint been solid, packs good, good construction, a little heavier then some ultralight shells but way way tougher.
I liked mine so much i bought the solid lead color version as well and use it for a general rain jacket.

How does the Foray fit? Is it a little looser then the Helium?

Definitely a bit looser fit. I'm 5'11 155# with a long torso and wear size Med in most everything. The Helium fits like a windshirt the Foray I can easily layer a synthetic puffy under it. The Foray also has a longer torso it seems to me which is important on a rain jacket. The Helium is just my ultralight insurance policy the Foray is for when I know it's going to rain.

The Foray seems like a pretty good option and is only a few ounces heavier (15.8 vs. 13.6) than the Dewpoint. How quickly does it dry out? One thing I really like about the Dewpoint is how it sheds water and drys out fast.
