I love Benelli shotguns but as much as I want to like their rifles I can't get past how ugly they are. I've handled a couple in the gun store and they felt okay although the safety location was odd.
I've shot one. Shot good but just no thanks to the ergonomics and looks. My cousin had one but I think he traded it off, that's how I got to shoot it. I would never intentionally spend money on one. I'm like everyone else....their shotguns are an entirely different thing.
I am in the process of setting one of these up for someone. They ordered a new one in all black, 30-06. Should be a fun project and I'll follow up after the 1st of the year with my take on it.
Ive always liked the look and concept of a semi auto rifle other than an AR platform , it seems like they never really took off though and I never understood why
They are about the most ugly rifle out there but 100% solid and as reliable as you can get a semi-auto rifle to be. I've used on in .300WM and it was really pleasant to shoot (recoil) and as accurate as most off the shelf bolt rifles. The trigger was excellent from the factory. It was average weight. If you want a semi-auto rifle for tough use, it would be my first choice.
My cousin has one, don't care for the mag release on it. Shoots just fine, but the ergos and looks leave a lot to be desired. To each his own I guess. If that were my only choice for a semi auto rifle.... I'd be shooting a slug gun lol.
I've been around several R1's and strongly considered one at one point. My take: Fantastic, typical benelli quality but lukewarm accuracy. Some would shoot 1" groups and others wouldn't do better than 3" or 4". Gun writers were getting some of the less accurate one's and reporting 2.5" groups were the best they could get. This was back when gun writers weren't terrified of giving nothing other than a positive review, even if the gun was terrible. Very few aftermarkets, rust easy, etc....
I think with such a proven platform in brownings BAR it's a tough market to crack especially in the $1000 range. The lines on an R1 are either adored or hated. Ergonomically it fit me well but likely not others.
Loaded for buddies fathernthat bought one and had no problem getting it to shoot under moa with hand loads. Ugly as hell and funky to shoot but it shot ok for a auto.
The one I used on one hunt had no problem with accuracy out of the box. It wasn't a half inch group gun, but carried 1-1.25"" groups at 100 with off the shelf factory ammo. I'd guess it was about a 2012 model. It was accurate enough at 300, which was the farthest I shot at the range when mounting the scope. I agree the mag release isn't the best design.
If you're in the market for a non AR/tactical/M14 style semi auto in common and traditional calibers, your choices are a bit limited... Benelli R1, Remington 7400/750/742, Browning BAR are about it.
I helped a friend with his in .300 Win Mag. It would hold 1" pretty easily with 180gr factory loads. The only issue it had was vertical stringing. Any heat in the barrel and it would start to string. 3 shots, even slow fire, was all it could do, then it had to cool for a good half hour.
Otherwise, good rifle. I wouldn't hesitate to take his out for a hunt.
